Living with the Laboratory Standard

The promulgation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s standard, Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, has brought about a need for an understanding of this regulation as well as an in-house program of compliance. This text, produced in 1998, has been designed for the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), who is responsible for the implementation of the Chemical Hygiene Plan, which is required by this standard, and who must live with it on a daily basis.

The text contains an interpretation of the standard with regard to the responsibilities of the CHO and offers guidelines that may be useful in bringing a facility into compliance with the regulation. These “helps” are designed to make it easier for the CHO to fulfill the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.1450 and to establish a record of performance and compliance under the standard.
