Report for Board
ACS Joint Board-Council Committee on Chemical Safety
San Diego, CA, April 2, 2001
The Committee on Chemical Safety has been active in preparing safety publications for use in schools at all levels. Chemical Safety for Teachers and their Supervisors, Grades 7–12, became available in print in January and will appear shortly on the Committee web site. A revised edition of Safety in the Elementary (K-6) Science Classroom will be available in mid-2001. Preparation of the seventh edition of Safety in Academic Chemistry Laboratories has begun, with publication expected in 2002. Another recent publication is the Safety Audit/Inspection Manual. Information on how to obtain these and other Committee publications is available on the web site,
(http://membership.acs.org/c/ccs).
The Committee worked with the National Chemistry Week (NCW) Task Force to draft safety guidelines for NCW activities, and with the Council of State Science Supervisors to prepare a safety booklet for teachers. The Committee is actively seeking partnerships with other groups on safety-related issues.
The Committee on Chemical Safety (CCS), along with the Committee on Environmental Improvement (CEI), approved continuation of the joint CEI/CCS Task Force on Laboratory Environmental Health and Safety, formerly the Task Force on Laboratory Waste Management. The name change indicates an expansion in the scope of the Task Force beyond waste management.
