Message from our Chair, DK

The year has gone by so quickly.  It still feels like just yesterday Chi-Tang nominated me to be Secretary of the Flavor Sub-Division.  I am touched at how AgFd members embraced me over the past decade and am proud to have made some wonderful, lasting friendships.  It has been a great experience and would not exchange it for anything, my sincere thanks to all of you who have helped me in countless ways over the years.  Admittedly touching the “Past Chair” pin on my lapel will be gratifying!

This year’s spring meeting was held in Salt Lake City, Utah; a venue that ACS explored for the first time.  From the reports I have seen, it was a huge success and can easily be seen as a step in the right direction for reaching out to folks in different cities to disseminate our message.  AgFd had 4 symposia, the Graduate Student contest and the General Papers sessions.  Of course, we had our usual Posters and participated in the SciMix as well.  In sum, we had close to five hundred scientists attend our fifteen sessions!

Our Chair Elect, Michael Appell, has worked tirelessly to bring you a wonderful Technical Program in Washington, D.C.  He has put together a diverse program comprised of thirteen symposia; five of them co-sponsored, and will include thirty-three sessions. In addition, our Vice-Chair Alyson Mitchell organized the traditional General Poster session and will be participating in the SciMix.

We also have something special for you this year.  Our very own Charles Brine has won the Innovative Project Grant from the ACS!  Charles has utilized these funds to create the Young Scientist Award Symposium to be held for the first time this Fall. The winner, of course, will be the AgFd Young Scientist for 2009.  We had over a dozen entries that were culled to six for the symposium.  Having been part of the selection committee, I must say we have a very impressive group of young scientists and every one of them is a winner.  I firmly believe that it will be a treat to listen to all of these young minds and encourage all of you to make it out to the Symposium Sunday morning to show your support.

My humble thanks to all of the Symposia organizers who have worked tirelessly to bring us a world class program.

Our executive meeting is scheduled for Sunday evening and the very important Future Program meeting is scheduled in our usual slot of Monday around lunchtime.  I would like to extend a personal invitation to each of you, to please come and participate in both events.  This is your Division, and as such you should feel free to come and contribute.  Your ideas are both welcome and necessary to maintain the growth of our organization.

Once at the conference, please come over to the AgFd hospitality table and we will be more than happy to answer any questions you have.  Also, please take this opportunity to peruse the ACS Symposium Series books. As usual OUP has a special conference price for attendees.

My special thanks to Mike Appell and Alyson Mitchell for a job well done.  To all of you, I wish a productive conference and an enjoyable visit to Washington, D.C.

It has been my sincere honor to serve all of you.  You will forever have my deepest gratitude for this opportunity.  I look eagerly towards the future, as I hope each of you do.

WELCOME
AGFD brings together persons particularly interested in the chemistry of agricultural and food products, both raw and finished; to foster programs of general papers and symposia on special topics dealing with this field of chemistry; to promote such other activities as will stimulate activity in and emphasize the importance of research in agricultural and food chemistry. AGFD provides quality, timely Symposium at ACS National Meetings. Programs are of interest not only to chemists, but to biochemists, biologists, agronomists, plant physiologists, molecular biologists, agricultural engineers, chemical engineers, material scientists and food scientists.

Technical focus is on agriculture, renewable resources, food composition, food quality, food processing, nutrition, biochemistry, food safety, food flavor, biotechnology, natural products, pharmaceuticals, green products, chemical raw materials and feedstocks, bioenergy, and sustainability.

Objectives of the division are to encourage the advancement and understanding of agricultural and food chemistry; and to promote scientific interest and inquiry in agricultural and food chemistry by divisional meetings, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussions and publications.

Vision  By 2011 we will increase membership engagement, broaden the impact of our programs, products, and services, apply innovative communication tools, and expand our global outreach.

Goals:

  1. Develop focused and timely programs, products and services that engage those involved in agriculture, food chemistry, and related fields.
  2. Enhance communication and market our programs, products, and services more effectively.
  3. Expand global impact by developing the infrastructure to deliver technical programming for targeted international audiences.
