A Training Session is held at Canisius College prior to the Local Section Olympiad Exam. Topics reviewed are: Organic Chemistry, Acid/Base Equilibria, and Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry. Students select two topics; each topic is presented twice for a period of one hour. Students do not have to be pre-registered to attend sessions and do not have to participate in these sessions to participate in the Local Section Exam. Training sessions are offered as a service to those students who wish some assistance in preparing for the Local Section Exam.
Cash prizes are raffled off to students and their teachers from participating schools. (Checks are mailed to teachers who are not present.) Sessions are followed by a free meal of sandwiches and cookies.
In 2010 the Training Session for the Western New York Chemistry Olympiad will be held at Canisius College in March.
During this training session, nine monetary prizes will be raffled off; three $100 checks for chemistry teachers from participating schools and six $50 gift certificates to participating students. Checks will be mailed to teachers if teachers are not present.
