EDITORIAL

A warm hello to you, fellow WNY-ACS member!

A hearty thanks to Dr. Michael Detty from the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, for such an engaging and informative presentation at our dinner meeting on Sept. 9th. He described photodynamic light therapy (using light to kill cancer cells) and the photosensitizers needed to make it work.

Ideally, these compounds should be highly specific and phototoxic to the cancer cells at the lowest concentration possible, as well as having a low human toxicity. Mike presented some very promising compounds and compared them to Photofrin®, a mixture of compounds used currently. Great work, Mike, and thanks again for sharing such neat chemistry with us!

The group of members who met were wonderfully personable. All kinds of topics were discussed over dinner, including how to get a roof done in only one summer, and how to resolve situations with difficult students. The door prizes were, of course, light-related, and included bulbs (offering “pure, true light”), a safety flare, and a night light. It was indeed true that “A good time was had by all!”

Please join us for our next dinner meeting on October 8, when we welcome Dr. Ange Fatta from Bufflink. His very timely topic, Creating a Life Sciences Economy in Buffalo Niagara, is sure to be a stimulating one. (See elsewhere in this issue for more info.) Hope to see you there!

Many thanks Ron Spohn, our newest Executive Committee Member. Ron has accepted the challenge to continue the terrific work done by the Education Committee. If you'd like to work with the Education Committee, please contact Ron at

(716) 688-2308 or ronald_spohn@praxair.com

Many thanks to Maria Pacheco for volunteering to step in as interm vice chair. Dr. Pacheco received her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico in 1983. After a post-doctoral position at the University of Notre Dame and a visiting professor position at the University of the Virgin Islands, she started her career at Buffalo State College, where she currently holds the position of associate professor in the Chemistry Department. Her research interests are in the area of chemical education, specifically curriculum development and assessment, and the use of case studies in chemistry instruction. She has been a member-at-large of the WNY ACS.

Western New York Local Section Wins a ChemLuminary Award

ChemLuminary Award 2003: National Chemistry Week Best Student Affiliate Event

An Enthusiastic Congratulations to the Student Affiliates at Canisius College. Their activities last year won national recognition for our local section in the highly competitive ChemLuminary Award. We are very proud of you!

The abstract for the award was as follows: The Student Affiliates Section from Canisius College, Buffalo, NY mesmerized the general public with demonstrations held at elementary and secondary schools, community centers, and the Museum of Science.

We are also very proud of our Younger Chemists Committee, who were runners-up for two ChemLuminary Awards.

Thanks again to Dave Nalewajek from Honeywell for representing our section at the Awards Presentation.

Yay! Keep up the great work!

Title: “Creating a life sciences economy in Buffalo Niagara”

Abstract: Buffalo Niagara has all of the building blocks needed to create a globally competitive life sciences economy. From world class innovation at the research institutions, to regional IT infrastructure, to attractive economic development incentives, Buffalo Niagara is poised to take off. BuffLink is a not for profit, private sector organization that has formulated a strategic plan to bring the vision to reality.

The presentation will focus on the opportunity, the plan, and the implementation of the plan.

BuffLink, Inc. was founded in 2001 by private sector and university leaders to catalyze Buffalo Niagara’s life sciences economy. Our Board of Directors is comprised of local business and university leaders who volunteer their time to lead this effort.

BuffLink is a mechanism, a community resource designed to increase entrepreneurial and business activity through the commercialization of institutional research. In addition, BuffLink serves many local researchers, entrepreneurs, existing life science businesses, and prospective businesses in finding key resources and support for growing their enterprise in Buffalo Niagara.
