 EDITORIAL

A warm hello to you, fellow ACS member!

I believe the Sheraton has never had such a neat demonstration: a strand of just-synthesized nylon stretching all around the room, held by oodles of fellow members and guests, concentrating on holding it all together! Everyone had nitrile gloves for safety, and a boatload of good humor as well. Thanks to Dave Nalewajek, our distinguished Schoellkopf awardee, for such a fun-filled talk. Thanks, too, to all who made the evening run so smoothly, especially Troy Wood, Chair of the Schoellkopf Committee. Hooray for the volunteers who make our section happen!

Great news in this issue: we've been chosen as finalists for three ChemLuminary awards, we have a new Education Committee Chair, a great line-up of dinner meetings for the fall, and terrific people on our ballot of officers for next year. As of this writing, we're still missing volunteers for the Member-at-Large position from Niagara or Welland Counties. Please call me if you're interested.

Looking forward to seeing you at our next dinner meeting on September 9th!

Good news - Overall Assessment of our Local Section 2002 Annual Report by the Local Section Activities Committee: Western New York is an active and viable Local section with good member participation that reaches out to all in the Section community. You have a very attractive and functional web site. Beautiful! Self-nominations for "Most Innovative New Activity or Program in a Local Section," "Outstanding High School Student Program Award”, "Most Original Hands-on Activity," "Best Student Affiliate Event," and "Local Section Award for Innovative Initiatives in Polymer Sciences." Good job and good luck!

Congratulations to Finalists for
2002 ChemLuminary Awards

Congratulations to our Younger Chemists Committee powered by UB graduate students and to the Student Affiliate Section at Canisius College. Because of these dynamos, our Local Section has been selected as a finalist for the following ChemLuminary Awards:

* National Chemistry Week Task Force -- Best Student Affiliate Event
* Younger Chemists Committee -- Most Creative Local Section Younger Chemists Committee Event Award
* Younger Chemists Committee -- Outstanding Local Section Younger Chemists Committee Award

Recipients will be announced and the presentation of awards will be at the 226th ACS National Meeting in New York, NY on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at New York's Hotel Pennsylvania in the Penntop Ballroom. The presentations will include awards given by 14 committees and divisions of the Society. Prior to the ceremony there will be a one-hour poster session in the Skytop Ballroom (adjacent to the Penntop Ballroom). David Nalewajek, our National Chemistry Week Committee Chair, will be our section representative, and will present a poster of these 2002 activities that led to our selection as a finalist. Congrats for an outstanding year!

Title: Photodynamic Therapy: Using Light to Kill Cancer Cells

Abstract: Photodynamic therapy is a relatively recent addition to the anti-cancer arsenal that uses a light source, a photosensitizer, and the oxygen found in tissues to produce a cytotoxic response. The photosensitizer is excited by wavelengths of light that more readily penetrate tissue (wavelengths between 600 and 900 nm) and the excited state of the photosensitizer reacts with oxygen to produce superoxide (from the singlet excited state) or singlet oxygen (from the triplet excited state). These reactive oxygen species cause the cellular damage. The design of photosensitizers must address structural features that help localize the photosensitizer in or around the tumor tissue and that help provide the proper photophysics. We have been actively studying core-modified porphyrins - porphyrins in which one or both N-H groups in the pyrrole rings are replaced with S, Se, or Te - as photosensitizers. These molecules have long wavelength absorption bands at 700 nm, generate singlet oxygen with quantum yields of > 80%, and are effective both in vitro and in vivo against murine Colo-26 cells (implanted tumors). Systematic variation of substituents has provided a model for optimizing uptake and efficacy.
