A warm hello to you, fellow ACS member!
A huge thank you is in store for all of those who made our Education Night and Award Dinner a great success. We are very proud of our student award winners, and especially proud of their teachers and our Distinguished High School Science Teacher of the Year, Mr. David Mills, whose touching words were straight from the heart. We had 74 attendees, and three received door prizes of ACS mugs with the slogan: "If you can read this (structure of caffeine), thank a chemistry teacher!"
On June 4, we'll honor Dr. David Nalewajek, our 2003 Schoellkopf Medal winner, at our annual Schoellkopf Medal Award Dinner, when we will also recognize our fifty-year members. Please join us for a wonderful evening of great food, camaraderie, and to say Thank You! to Dave for his devoted service to our section and his excellence in research. National Chemistry Week reaches many more children because of his work. (And that's just one example of his service - Dave has been a great resource for me with respect to the leadership of this section.) Please join us in honoring Dave Nalewajek and our fifty-year members on June 4th.
Nominations for the 2004 ballot for officers are officially open. If you are interested, by all means, don't be shy and give me or one of the officers a ring or an email. Any positions that are currently open may be appointed by the chair. A hearty thanks goes to Dr. Dave Ortz from West Valley Nuclear, who has been appointed to the open position of Member-at-Large this year. We especially need an Education Committee Chair.
Looking forward to seeing you on June 4th!
Patricia DePra Springsteen

The Schoellkopf Committee of the Western New York Local Section of the American Chemical Society is pleased to announce that Dr. David Nalewajek of West Seneca is its 2003 recipient of the Jacob F. Schoellkopf Medal. This award is the oldest local section award in the nation, and was named in honor of chemical industry entrepreneur Jacob F. Schoellkopf, founder of National Aniline Works. The jury cited Dr. Nalewajek “For his extensive efforts in promoting increased science awareness to the public through tireless, nationally recognized efforts by the national organization of the American Chemical Society, and for his inventive creativity, particularly in the field of fluorocarbon synthesis.” Dr. Nalewajek currently holds a position as a Senior Principal Scientist at Honeywell International, Inc., in Buffalo.
After graduating from Hutchinson Central Technical High School in Buffalo, he attended Canisius College in Buffalo, where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1974. He subsequently attended the State University of NY at Buffalo, where he graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1978. For the next two years, Dr. Nalewajek was a postdoctoral researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ. In 1980, Dr. Nalewajek returned to the area and began as a Research Chemist at Allied-Signal. Allied-Signal has now transitioned into Honeywell International.
Dr. Nalewajek’s dedication to scientific education in the area is quite notable and worthy of special commendation. Dr. Nalewajek’s efforts in coordinating local National Chemistry Week (NCW) activities for the local section for over a decade have provided our section with national recognition as the recipient of the Phoenix Award for NCW excellence (six times) during his leadership, with an Honorable Mention as Best National Chemistry Week in the Nation (1998) and Most Unique Demonstration Program (1999).
He has been intensely involved in volunteer efforts with the Buffalo Museum of Science, having graciously donated time as a lecturer and also his creativity in developing demonstrations and laboratories for elementary school children. Furthermore, he has helped establish awards for middle school science students in both the Buffalo and West Seneca School Districts. Dr. Nalewajek has also been a strong supporter of the local effort for the Chemistry Olympiad, both in advisement and in generating financial sponsorship. In 1995, Dr. Nalewajek was one of the first recipients of the Western New York “Pathfinder Awards” sponsored by Business First, where he was recognized for his “Outstanding Contributions to Education in the Community.”
Dr. Nalewajek is also an accomplished scientist. During his career, he has authored more than 30 scientific papers and 47 patents. His inventions, especially in the development of synthetic methods for fluorocarbons, have been highly recognized by the local Technical Societies Council/Niagara Frontier Patent Lawyers Council, where he has twice been named “Western New York Inventor of the Year” (1989 and 1997), once, the 2nd place winner (2001), and three times the 3rd place winner (1997, 1999, and 2002) along with being named a finalist for this award in thirteen other years! This is a testament to Dr. Nalewajek’s long-standing research productivity, which has generated substantial economic benefits to the local community.
Dr. Nalewajek has served the local section over the years in numerous capacities: as Vice-Chairman, Chairman-Elect, Chairman, Councilor, as well as his previous service to the Schoellkopf Committee and current service as Chairman and Director of local section National Chemistry Week activities. The Schoellkopf Award Banquet will be held June 4, 2003, at the Four Seasons Sheraton. This year’s Schoellkopf Committee consisted of Joanna Christopher, Luis Colón, Mariusz Kozik, Patricia Springsteen, and was chaired by Troy Wood.

We are seeking individuals to participate in a Chemagination Committee either contacting teachers, seeking partners, or coordinating the logistics of this science fair-type event. Chemagination is a contest that sparks the creativity in the minds of high school students and challenges them to look 25 years into the future to predict a development or innovation in the field of chemistry that will be important in the lives of teenagers.
The contest has been developed by the ACS Office of
Community Activities (OCA), and is offered as a program for us to use to reach
out to the high school teachers and future chemists within our borders.
For information about the contest, visit chemistry.org/oca or
call OCA at 800-227-5558 x4458.

National Chemistry Week (NCW) is less than five months away!! This year’s theme is “Earth's Atmosphere and Beyond!” and will be celebrated October 19-25. The ACS Office of Community Activities will release the 2003 Edition of “Celebrating Chemistry” in late August. This activity newspaper contains hands-on activities and articles suited for children in grades 4-6.
A book list with related resources will be available in July in print and on the website, chemisty.org/ncw. The unifying event will be “Honoring Innovators and Pioneers in Aviation and Atmospheric Chemistry”, and the K-12 contest will be a poster contest that matches the theme. A Student Affiliate contest will be sponsored and posted on the NCW website as well.
NCW Coordinators in each local section will receive support materials and are the ones coordinating each section’s events. To help plan the events in this area, contact David Nalewajek, Honeywell, 827-6303, david.nalewajek@honeywell.com
