Hello Western New York, and Happy Autumn to you! We've survived over a year since 9-11-2001 and now we have found Al Quaida right here in our own backyard. How has this shift in consciousness affected your lives? For me it is a reminder of how very wonderful life is for us, in spite of all of our problems. It has renewed in me an appreciation for family, friends, and colleagues. It has reminded me of the glorious history of our region, particularly during its heyday - the electrochemical revolution.
Please join your fellow chemists who still remain in Western New York on
September 26 for an evening of conversation and remembrance of who Western New
Yorkers were, and how we became who we are today.
We will be holding elections for officers next
month, so send in your nominations or volunteer to get involved. A schedule of
meetings for the year is forthcoming as well.
I look forward to seeing some new faces on September 26. Students, don't forget that the local chapter supports your attendance - your meals are half price. New members or first time meeting attendees - your first meal is free!
This year promises to be one of growth and renewal for our nation and our local section. Peace and prosperity to all of you. Namaste. Editor

“WNY Section American Chemical Society: 100 Years of History”
The Western New York Section of the American Chemical Society received its charter from the National ACS on November 18, 1905. There is a rich history of the Section which parallels the growth and demise of the chemical industry in WNY. In 2005, we will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Section. In preparation of this event, the Section will undertake efforts to document the history in a booklet similar to 50 and 75-year histories already published. This presentation will highlight major events over the last 100 years, including two National ACS meetings, establishment of the Schoellkopf Medal, prominent industry support of the ACS, and individuals who were leaders in the Section.
An outline of activities planned for writing the history and a call for contributors will be presented. Copies of the 50-year history, published in 1952, will be available for distribution.
2001 – 2002 Student Affiliates Chapter Awards
The Society Committee on Education is pleased to announce the 2001–2002 Student Affiliates Chapter Awards. We congratulate these chapters and thank them for submitting an annual report. The activities listed in the annual reports served as a basis for award selections. If your chapter would like to be considered for a 2002–2003 chapter award, start keeping records of all your events and submit a chapter report in June 2003.
Awards are classified as outstanding, commendable, and honorable mention. We are awarding 31 outstanding, 55 commendable, and 67 honorable mention awards. Listed below are the award-winning schools, the 2001–2002 SA chapter president(s), and faculty advisor(s). All chapters will be honored during the ACS national meeting in New Orleans on March 23, 2003. Join the American Chemical Society as we salute these dynamic chapters!

The Honeywell International Foundation has announced a $47,880 grant to sponsor the Western New York Chemistry Olympiad program until 2004. The yearly event, whose preliminary stages are held at Canisius College under the direction of Dr. Mariusz Kozik and the auspices of the American Chemical Society, allows local students to compete for a spot on the U.S. national team, which represents our country at the international competition. The top 20 students in the country, identified by their scores on the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam, are invited to the study camp at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where they compete for a spot on the U.S. team.
The WNY Section of the ACS has a very rich tradition in International Chemistry Olympiad competition. Within the last 15 years 12 WNY students qualified for the study camp and 5 represented the U.S. at the international finals, winning 2 gold,
1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. William Lin, a senior at Williamsville East High School, was one of the 20 finalists from across the country that qualified to the study camp in 2001 and 2002. He is the first alternate on the U.S. team this year!
Honeywell has been a proud supporter of the WNY Chemistry Olympiad for the last 15 years. The new grant increases Honeywell's commitment to the Olympiad and its mission to foster increased interest in the chemical sciences among high school students," said David Nalewajek, Senior Principal Scientist at Honeywell's Buffalo Research Lab. The grant money will be used for monetary awards for Chemistry Olympiad students and their teachers, pre-Olympiad study sessions, and summer research by Olympiad students at Canisius College.

The Eli Lilly & Company is sponsoring a program to provide funding for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral women chemists to travel to scientific meetings in 2003 to present the results of their research. Grants may be applied only for registration, travel, and accommodations, and are restricted to travel to meetings within the United States. Grant funds are limited, but there are some funds set aside for undergraduates. Only U. S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible. Applications should be limited to one per research group. Awards will be given with preference to the following order: (1) any applicant who will be making her first presentation (regardless of format) at a national or major meeting, (2) graduate or postdoctoral applicants who have not presented at a national or major meeting since leaving undergraduate school. Women who have received a prior award under this program are ineligible.
The deadline dates for receipt of applications for 2003 meetings are as follows:
· September 15, 2002 - Meetings between January 1 and June 30, 2003
· February 15, 2003 - Meetings between July 1 and December 31, 2003
In order to apply for the award, please submit the following:
A resume (include permanent address).
A
completed official application form that you must obtain from your department
chair, or may download from http://membership.acs.org/W/WCC/travap00.pdf
(if you need the Acrobat reader program, go to http://www/adobe.com/store/products/reader.html).
The application form is also available from the WCC Staff Liaison at the

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Chemistry Division has instituted a program of Research Sites for Educators in Chemistry (RSEC) in recognition of the need to encourage research and experiential learning at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) in the US. The Site at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville offers US PUI faculty in chemistry, biology, and other related fields opportunities for NSF-supported fellowships aimed at enhancing both research and teaching in chemistry and related disciplines at Fellows’ home institutions. Postdoctoral fellowships are available (at lower priority) for prospective PUI faculty who are US citizens or permanent residents.
NSF/RSEC now offers Fellows flexible research visits of 2-15 months at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (UTK) and/or at a research-active institution, including Oak Ridge National Lab, UT-Chattanooga, University of the South (Sewanee), University of North Carolina-Asheville, Berea College, and Procter & Gamble. Research hosts at UT and the “partner” institution(s) will help each Fellow establish collaborations sustainable beyond the term of appointment though “catalyst” grants of up to $7000 upon completion of the Fellowship. Funding is also provided for sabbatical and/or summer salary, displacement and travel expenses, and supplies.
Teaching activities will be limited to no more than one course per semester (none in the summer), providing an opportunity to share teaching ideas while being actively engaged in state-of-the-art research. Support is now available for a qualified student from the Fellow’s home institution for research with the Fellow during and/or after the Fellowship.
Details about the program, including an on-line application form, are available at http://www.chem.utk.edu/~rsec/, or by contacting the RSEC Program Director:

Mail to: rsec@utk.edu 865-974-8019
Applications can be submitted at any time, but should be received by mid-January for Fall start dates and mid-July for Spring start dates.

The ACS Committee on Professional Training (CPT) is in the final stages of revising the guidelines for the chemistry education option as part of the ACS approval process for undergraduate chemistry programs. In addition to revising the guidelines, CPT is considering the addition of a chemistry education minor. The Committee would like your comments on the proposed changes to the guidelines. For more details, please visit the CPT website at http://chemistry.org/education/cpt.
The ACS Office of Community Activities invites you to participate in National Chemistry Week 2002, October 20-26. Involve your community in learning about the importance of chemistry by using the theme for this year - “Chemistry Keeps Us Clean.” Join with chemists across the country as they share the chemical story of the relevance of chemistry to cleaning by conducting presentations, demonstration shows, and hands-on activities for the public. Consider becoming involved in the unifying event for NCW 2002, Chemistry Makes Cleaning Possible - a personal hygiene collection campaign to benefit local charities. For more ideas and information about NCW, call 1-800-227-5558 ext. 6097 or visit the website at http://chemistry.org/ncw.
