At April’s meeting we will celebrate Education Night, when we recognize
the Section’s accomplishments in the area of secondary and college science
teaching.
First, the Education Committee of the Section
announces the winner for Outstanding High School Science Teacher of the
Year. Each year all WNY high school principals are invited to
nominate up to 2 science teachers for this award.
The selection of the award winner is based on strength and innovation in
teaching, exceptional service to students, efforts to keep abreast of scientific
developments, and extracurricular activities in science and education.
Continuing with the secondary education theme,
the Section’s Coordinator of the Chemistry Olympiad for high school students
announces the WNY team that will compete in the National Chemistry
Olympiad. These students are selected based on their performance on the
Local Section Test that takes place every year in March at Canisius College.
This year more than 60 students competed for the 8 spots on the WNY team. They will take the national exam, and if they score in the
top 20 in the nation, they will qualify to attend the study camp at the Air
Force Academy in Colorado. During
that camp, the 20 students will compete for the 4 spots on the United States
team that will travel in July to The Netherlands, where the best students from
all over the world will compete for medals at the International Chemistry
Olympiad. The WNY Section of the
ACS has a very rich tradition in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
Within the last 15 years 12 WNY students qualified to attend the study
camp and 5 represented the United States at the international finals, winning 2
gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
The 8 students who qualified for the WNY Team, as well as their chemistry
teachers, have been invited to the dinner.
Moving on to college level, the Education
Committee of the Section announces the outstanding undergraduate seniors from
WNY colleges majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and/or
chemical engineering. These students were chosen by their departments for the
accomplishments in the areas of academics and service to the ACS.
The evening ends with a presentation by an
invited speaker in the area of science education.
The Executive Committee of the Section invites
all of you to recognize all the winners and join in the applause.
Let’s make it the largest crowd yet by turning out and showing our
support for our best science teachers and most talented and committed students -
the future leaders in our profession.
