EDITORIAL

Happy Holidays to all local ACS members and your families.  Our Western New York section is well on its way to a revitalized and successful year.  We've elected officers - thanks for your votes!  Our Christmas meeting was well attended and an enjoyable time was had by all.  The Education Committee is reviewing nominations for High School Science Teacher of the Year, to be awarded at the Education Night meeting this spring.  The Schoellkopf Award Committee is planning to meet in late January to choose the winner of the oldest local ACS section award in America.  Speakers for the

January and February meetings have been scheduled and we are ready to roll into the new year, full steam ahead!

Topic:
"The Commercial Nuclear Fuel Cycle"
Since its inception in the 1950's commercial nuclear power has undergone many changes in pursuit of increased safety and efficiency. This talk will present an overview of the nuclear fuel cycle with emphasis on the chemistry of spent fuel reprocessing.  The challenge of waste management and decommissioning of redundant nuclear plants and facilities will be included.

Speaker:
Tim is a chemist working for a subsidiary company of the UK based British Nuclear Fuels plc, BNFL Inc in the US. He has 19 years experience in radiochemistry and has been involved in R&D associated with nuclear clean up and waste management for the past 15 years. Since coming to America in 1995 Tim has had the opportunity to be involved in projects at Oak Ridge, Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, Rocky Flats, Hanford, West Valley, and numerous commercial nuclear power plants in the US. Tim is (a number of years) old and has a wife and son; they live in Fairfax, Virginia and are currently based in Williamsville while Tim is on assignment at the West Valley Demonstration Project in WNY.
