“Pan American Exposition A Bird’s-Eye View of Sights & Sounds”
Speaker: Author: Raya Lee
Reservations: Patty at 888-2340 by Friday, December 7, 2001
About the Speaker:
Raya’s commitment to music and the arts quite naturally led to her interest in writing and narrating a variety of children’s stories. Raya has a Masters in Library Science. She is currently the Music Librarian in the Music Department at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. She also held the position of Assistant Librarian with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at Kleinhans Music Hall.
About the Topic:
With an eye to the heritage of Greater Buffalo Raya has written a historical review of the highlights of Buffalo’s Pan-American Exposition of 1901.
I requested the editor of the Double Bond to allow me to write this editorial this month because I believe we are at a critical time in the history of the Western New York Section. From its early beginnings in 1905, the Section was the beneficiary of a large and dynamic chemical industry located in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. We were one of the largest Sections in the ACS and hosted national meetings for the chemical and electrochemical societies.
But our membership began to decline in the 1960’s and the demographics are much different. Our current membership has large sub-groups of senior, retired chemists and graduate students and there are few large chemical companies which employ any sizeable number of chemists.
Our sparsely attended monthly meetings and paucity of candidates for Section officers reflect the transition experienced by the Section.
In October, a group of past Section officers met and decided to undertake a campaign to revitalize the Section. We recruited a new slate of candidates for office and are determined to offer an interesting monthly program of meetings. However, we need the help of many more members. If you are a past officer, step forward and be a mentor for one of our new volunteers. Make an effort to attend the meetings and offer suggestions for changes you think might benefit the Section. Nominate worthy candidates for the high school teacher award and the Schoellkopf Medal. I have offered to mentor the new Section Chairman and I will also sponsor some noontime meetings for senior chemists, but we need your help. The WNY Section has too rich a history to die a slow death from apathy and neglect. I hope to see you at the December meeting.

WCC Celebrates Its 75th
Anniversary in 2002
“Diversity in the 21st Century—Advancing Women in Science” is the theme of the WCC Diamond Jubilee planned for the 2002 ACS national and regional meetings in honor of the committee’s 75th anniversary.
The celebration will be highlighted in a Presidential Plenary event and multiple symposia at the ACS Spring National Meeting in Orlando. The plenary event will feature high-profile speakers such as Marye Ann Fox, Chancellor, North Carolina State University; Stephen A. Di Biase, Vice President of PuriNOx ™ and Emulsified Products, Lubrizol Corp.; and, Fran Keeth, CEO and President, Shell Chemical. Other symposia planned are: Women in Inorganic Chemistry; Collaborations: Networking; Collaborations: Professional Organizations; Early Careers of Chemists; Eli Lilly/WCC Travel Awards: Past and Present; Women Scientists of the Manhattan Project Era; In Memoriam: Nina Roscher – Teacher, Historian, Mentor & Role Model; Chemically Incorrect: Hitting the Glass Ceiling; and, Mentoring: A Strategic Tool for Professional Development.
The Women in Industry Breakfast will consist of roundtable discussions on the topic of “Rules of the Game”, followed by speakers who will address this subject at the Industry Pavilion. The Women Chemists Luncheon will feature Marion Thurnauer, Director of Chemistry, Argonne National Lab, and recipient of the 2002 Garvan-Olin Medal, as their keynote speaker.
To bring the 75th anniversary celebration to the regional level, and in keeping with the Presidential theme of diversity, the WCC has created a regional award to recognize individuals who significantly foster diversity in the chemical enterprises. The award will be given without regard to age, gender, or nationality of the recipient at each ACS regional meeting in 2002.
Please join in with the celebration of the WCC’s 75th anniversary! Each local section is invited to participate by incorporating the committee’s theme “Diversity in the 21st Century—Advancing Women in Science” into their meetings and special events during 2002.
