At last the vernal equinox has passed, and we can look forward to the summer solstice. Nominations for the Distinguished High School Science Teacher of the Year Award have undergone review and evaluation for the Education Night dinner on May 2, 2000 in the West Wing of the Student Center. The nominees are very impressive in their qualifications, talent, hard work and dedication to nurturing their students. The judges had a difficult choice to make!
June brings the Schoellkopf award and the end of another season of WNY ACS dinner meetings. Election of officers for the local section are pending; see their biographies in this issue.
We will have two editions of the Double Bond this month; in the second issue we will have another election ballot for the upcoming terms for officers.
Any local member who wishes to contribute an article or item of interest please contact either the editor or assistant editor. Your suggestions are welcome! This is your section, so get involved!
Editor
Joanna Christopher

To date 110 local sections have developed and organized the following programs:
Career Management/Development Workshops
Strategies for Job and Career Transitioning
Employment Outlook Marketability, and
Job Security
Job Searches through the Internet
Access to ACS printed literature at
monthly meetings
Networking opportunities for area talent
Directories of local job-seeking members
Joint programs with neighboring sections
Your section can get started by identifying a local volunteer to become a coordinator. All new coordinators attend weekend workshops held in Washington, D. C. The workshop will provide information on all the career resources available from ACS.
DON'T WAIT- register a coordinator for your local section today! For more information, please contact Judith Jankowski, Career Services, 800-227-5658, ext. 6211 or

Dr. Mary McCourt received her Ph.D. in 1988 in theoretical/computational chemistry from SUNYAB. From there she had a post doc at RPCI with Dr. Robert Rein where she continued her computational studies but applied them to biological systems. In 1989, Dr. McCourt joined the staff of the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute and in 1994 also became an assistant professor of Chemistry at D'Youville College and in 1999 she joined the Chemistry faculty at Niagara University. Dr. McCourt has also been secretary for the ACS for the past two years. Dr. McCourt's research interests include the study of the structural parameters responsible for the stabilization of multi-component solids as well as the theoretical development of methods for determining protein structures using electron diffraction data. Recently she started work on projects involving the computational modeling of drugs involved in breast cancer treatment. Dr. McCourt is married and has two children and resides in Snyder, New York. She and her husband are avid collectors of early American primitives and folk art.
Dr. Curt Mancuso is currently Business Development Specialist at Life Technologies, a leading supplier to academic researchers and the biotechnology industry. From 1992-96 he scaled up synthetic organic processes for pharmaceutical active ingredients as a Senior development Chemist and interim Manager of Process Development at Hoechst Celanese in Rhode Island. From 1990-1992 Curt performed research on heterogeneous catalysts for the production of ethylene oxide as a Senior Chemist for Union Carbide in Charleston, West Virginia. Curt has actively participated in several ACS local sections, most recently as Member-at-Large for Niagara Falls.
Dr. Andrew Poss is a Senior Project Leader at Honeywell International. He is currently the Treasurer for the WNY-ACS and is a candidate for re-election. Dr. Poss received his B.S.(1978) and Ph.D. (1984) in organic chemistry from the University of Rochester. He next joined the faculty of SUNY at Buffalo as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry where he pursued research on the chemistry and utility of vitamin C organic synthesis. Since 1989 Andy has been employed at Allied-Signal, now Honeywell, where he is technical leader for the FluoroSolutions group. He is also a lecturer in organic chemistry for Millard Fillmore College
Dr. Marcy Marino has resided in Niagara County most of her life. A graduate of Lewiston-Porter Senior High School, she attended SUNY Oswego, earning both her BS and MS in Chemistry. She moved to Chicago and worked as the senior chemist for the W. E. Long Bakery Foods Laboratory, performing nutritional analysis on bakery products before returning to school and earning a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College. She is currently the laboratory supervisor for the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Niagara University.
Dr. Randy Leising is a Senior Project Scientist in the R&D Department at Wilson Greatbatch Ltd., where he has worked since 1991. He received his Ph.D. degree in inorganic chemistry from the University at Buffalo in 1989 under the direction of Professor Ken Takeuchi, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow from 1989 to 1991 in the bioinorganic labs of Professor Larry Que at the University of Minnesota. He presently conducts basic and applied research related to advanced batteries. Randy is also serving as the Secretary of the Technical Societies Council of the Niagara Frontier.
Dr. Peter Schaber is Chairman and Professor of Chemistry at Canisius College. He received his B.S. at Canisius in 1975 and his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1980, working part of that time at N.C. State University with his research professor. His post-doctorate was spent at Argonne National Laboratory under the direction of Dr. J. J. Katz where his research involved the investigation of chlorophyll reactivity and special pair synthesis. He has been an ACS member since 1975, a WNY-ACS member from 1975-79 and again from 1983 to present. Peter has served as Chair of the Young Chemist's and was also Chairman of the WNY Section in 1989.
