EDITORIAL
There are significant changes taking place with the publication and
distribution of the Double Bond and I want to review these changes with
you again. As you recall, in last month's issue, we announced that the
Double Bond was now being published electronically and available on the
World Wide Web on our WNY-ACS home page. In response to our query,
approximately 50 members requested continuance of a printed copy mailed
out every month. Another 25 members indicated a preference for E-mail
and they will no longer receive the printed version. There is a
three-month window to respond and so I request everyone to express their
preference to us by mailing back the completed form found in this issue
(page 15). Beginning with the April issue, we will only mail the Double
Bond to ACS members who specifically request a printed copy. If you
have access to a computer, we encourage you to consult our home page.

APPLICATIONS INVITED
CHEMICAL HERITAGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARS IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION
Applications are invited for the 1998-99 Chemical Heritage Foundation
Scholars in Chemical Education. Two positions are available, pending
funding.
The Scholars in Chemical Education will spend one academic year,
beginning in September 1998 and ending in May 1999, in residence at the
Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) in Philadelphia. Using the resources
of CHF's Othmer Library of Chemical History, other area libraries, and
associated resources, these scholars will develop new classroom
materials emphasizing the human perspective of science as well as its
history and impact.
Applicants must be tenured faculty from chemistry, chemical engineering,
or related departments, who regularly teach "science and society"
courses to non-major undergraduates. They should also be interested in
one of the scholarly territories emphasized at CHF: The Human and
Historical Dimensions of Pharmaceutical Innovation. The Emergency of
Biotechnology, Petrochemicals, or Information Science.
Along with a curriculum vitae and the names and phone numbers of three
references, applicants should include a letter describing their
experience in teaching non-majors, sample course syllabi, their plans
for the creation of new classroom resources, and an essay describing how
their future teaching plans coincide with one or more of CHF's scholarly
territories. Application must be submitted by March 1, 1998 to Leo
Slater, Chemical Heritage Foundation, 315 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia,
PA 19106; phone (215) 925-2222 ext. 224; fax (215) 925-1954.
A CYBERSPACE SCIENCE MILESTONE: ALL ACS JOURNALS NOW ON THE 'NET
The launch of 25 Web editions means new features, greater
comprehensives, and flexibility for subscribers.
The ACS Publications Division has announced that-for the first
time-Internet editions of all 25 of its prestigious journals are
available. Officially launched at the ACS National Meeting in Las
Vegas, these Web versions include interactive features not available in
the print journals and a wide range of subscription options.
"We're providing our members and other scientists with what they've been
asking for-Web access to all our journals," said Robert Bovenschulte,
director, ACS Publications. "Few, if any, other scientific publishers
can match the combination of new features, comprehensives, and
flexibility we offer on the Web."
The ACS Web editions contain
Two separate formats to view articles: interactive text (HTML) and
complete page image (PDF). Users can search and print articles from
the entire database starting from 1996 to the present.
Interactive links to other recognized databases. These include Medline,
the Protein Database, GenBank, and Chemport.
Articles ASAP (as soon as published). Beginning in January 1998, ACS
will post journal articles on the Web as soon as they have been peer
reviewed, copy edited, and checked by authors for accuracy. That
will allow subscribers to see "published" articles several weeks before
they appear in the pages of a printed journal.
"The editions come with flexible pricing, so subscribers pay only for as
much or as little information as they need," said Bovenschulte.
For ordering and price information call 1-800-333-9511 or
1-614-447-3671, or travel to the ACS home page and click on "About
Electronic Editions" at http://pubs.acs.org.
IN MEMORIAM
John H. Mason, 68, of Clarence, a physical organic and industrial
chemist who worked for many years with Carborundum Co., died Saturday
(Dec. 27, 1997) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst, after
a brief illness. Born in Batavia, he was raised in Rochester and
received his bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester in 1950
and his doctorate in physical organic chemistry from Carnegie Mellon
University in 1955.
He spent most of his career as an industrial chemist beginning with
Union Carbide Plastics Co. in New Jersey.
In 1962 he joined Carborundum in Niagara Falls where he worked as
manager in several research and development positions until 1983. He
was responsible for the development of eight U.S. patents relating to
his work and wrote chapters in two books on polymers and 13 articles in
chemical research publications.
He was founder and president of Mason Abrasive Inc., in Akron from
1983 through 1988.
After his retirement, he was a part-time international technical
consultant for several firms and an instructor in the chemistry
department at Niagara County Community College.
LOCAL CAREER ASSISTANCE
If you've ever been asked to assist a colleague with finding a job or
wished that there was one convenient source for career information for
your own job search, then the Local Section Career Program is your
one-stop shop to these answers and more.
Local career coordinators quickly respond to requests for career
information and assistance by providing lists of employers from the
surrounding area, sponsoring career development workshops, and
distributing career materials to local members.
Exactly half (94) of all ACS local sections have a coordinator to answer
these kinds of job queries for their members. If you'd like to obtain
more information or volunteer to be a local career coordinator then
contact your section chairman or Tanya Fogg at 1-800-227-5558, ext. 6191
or via e-mail to t_fogg@acs.org. All coordinators attend an all
expenses paid weekend training session in Washington, DC.
