EDITORIAL
I want to take this opportunity to advise you of some policy changes in the publication and distribution of the Double Bond. With this first issue of the new year we are moving boldly into the electronic age of communication. The Western New York Section will now maintain its own Web page on the Internet. The address is www.canisius.edu/~dblbond
The Web page will allow us to link with the National ACS home page as well as maintain a current news and information page for the local section. Just as significant is the inauguration of the E-mail edition of the Double Bond which will be published electronically on our Web page every month. Enclosed in this issue is a return notice which you need to return to us if you want to continue to receive a printed copy of the Double Bond. We will afford ample opportunity for responses but beginning with the April issue, we will only mail to ACS members who specifically request a hard copy. If you have access to the Web, it will benefit the Section if you read the Double Bond in this form, since our mailing costs will greatly decrease. I welcome any advice or opinions you want to express about this new policy which was approved by the Section's executive committee. Joseph F. Bieron Editor

About our Speaker:Dr. Joseph F. Bieron is professor of chemistry at Canisius College and an active member of the local Section. He is editor of the Double Bond, past Chairman of the Section and a Schoellkopf Medal recipient. He currently serves as the Section's historian as well. Dr. Bieron has a long time interest in local history and is active in several history projects and publications at Canisius.
Abstract:The generation of electricity at Niagara Falls beginning in 1895 marked the beginning of the electrochemical industry in Western New York. Available energy also spurred the growth of electrothermal industries and in the late 1920's Western New York was one of the centers of the chemical industry in the United States. Some examples of major industries will be highlighted and the synergistic growth of hydroelectric power and the chemical industry will be a focus of the presentation. The presentation features slides, publications, photos and maps of our rich heritage in Western New York.

A Cyberspace Science Milestone: All ACS Journals Now on the 'Net
Launch of 25 Web editions means newfeatures, greater comprehensives, and flexibility for subscribers.
The ACS Publications Division has announced that-for the first time-Internet editions of all 25 of its prestigious journals are available. Officially launched at the ACS National Meeting in Las Vegas, these Web versions include interactive features not available in the print journals and a wide range of subscription options.
"We're providing our members and other scientists with what they've been asking for-Web access to all our journals," said Robert Bovenschulte, director, ACS Publications. "Few, if any, other scientific publishers can match the combination of new features, comprehensives, and flexibility we offer on the Web."
The ACS Web editions contain
Two separate formats to view articles: interactive text (HTML) and complete page image (PDF). Users can search and print articles from the entire database starting from 1996 to the present.
Interactive links to other recognized databases. These include Medline,
Articles ASAP (as soon as published). Beginning in January 1998, ACS reviewed, copy edited, and checked by authors for accuracy. That will allow subscribers to see "published" articles several weeks before they appear in the pages of a printed journal.
"The editions come with flexible pricing, so subscribers pay only for as much or as
little information as they need," said Bovenschulte. For ordering and price information call 1-800-333-9511 or 1-614-447-3671, or travel to the ACS home page and click on "About Electronic Editions" at http://pubs.acs.org.
Free Access Through 1997
To kick off the new Internet journal editions, ACS Pubs is making access to these titles FREE for the remainder of 1997. To view any of the 20 just-released Internet journals, see the journal home page at http://pubs.acs.org.
