Editorial

On October 22nd nine WNY ACS members attended a very interesting presentation by Dr. David Hughes of Merck, Rahway, NJ. Dr. Hughes, a Senior Investigator with over 16years of drug synthesis experience, did an excellent job of describing physical organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and catalysts. He also described some of the analytical techniques he uses when evaluating organic compounds resulting from his various drug synthesis experiments. The drug development and approval process was discussed extensively over dinner. This timely topic, interesting presentation, and informal dinner discussion did a nice job of teaching us how organic chemistry and analytical chemistry are used in the drug development process; a process that ultimately allows chemistry to improve the quality of life for all. At our October Executive Committee meeting, we decided not to schedule a dinner meeting for November. The basis for the decision was the fact that numerous active ACS members would be extremely busy with other events. National Chemistry Week, November 1-7, activities involved approximately 50 student (graduate and undergraduate) volunteers from UB, Canisius and Buffalo State. The group of volunteers worked with nearly 100 schools, interacted with nearly 2500 students in grades K-9 and used demonstrations, presentations and hands-on experiments to teach about color, polymers, acids and bases, and phase changes. Another program supported by the WNY ACS was the Chemistry Merit Badge program recently held at the Museum of Science and attended by 80 Boy Scouts of America. The Career Services Department of the ACS, UBıs Graduate Chemistsı Club, and the Younger Chemistsı Committee were also busy. They organized and will present two timely career workshops titled ³Conducting an Effective Job Search² and ³Individual Resume Review.² These workshops are being held 11/21 at UBıs North Campus. Also on 11/21, the Buffalo Museum of Science Demonstration Program will provide hands-on chemistry activities for the general public. To all of the volunteers who work countless hours on these programs and share their expertise with the residents of WNY, thank you very much! Your efforts are extremely worthwhile and greatly appreciated.

Mike Brewster
