Editorial

I was unable to attend the September 22nd meeting. From what I have heard, the talk was extremely interesting and informative. Dr. Vivian Cody, Senior Research Scientist and Head of the Molecular Structure and Drug Design Group at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, gave an excellent presentation entitled ñUse of Virtual Reality and Computer Modeling Tools, Structure-based Drug Design of Antipneumocystis Agentsî. Approximately twelve attended the meeting, enjoyed fine food at The Eagle House Restaurant in Williamsville, asked many great questions and spent a considerable amount of time informally discussing this timely topic.

As many of you know, I have been working with David Roll, Chair of the Rochester Section of ACS, and discussing possible dates for a joint meeting between our sections. He is extremely interested in a joint meeting but recognizes that both sections have standard programs (Job fairs, National Chemistry Week activities, holiday dinners, awards ceremonies, etc.) that must be completed. Until we accomplish a joint meeting, I will continue to share Double Bonds with David and remind him that Rochester ACS members are welcome at all of our dinner meetings.

Any suggestions for other local organizations (A&WMA, IChE, IFT, IEEE, etc.) that may be interested in co-sponsoring or presenting at a chemistry-related meeting of general interest would be greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone that I should contact, please call me at 542-5492.

The next meeting of the Executive Committee will be on Wednesday, October 7th at 7:00 PM at UBÍs Amherst campus. The meeting will take place, as usual, in Room 306 of the Natural Science and Mathematics Complex. I hope to see many of you there.

Mike

About our Speaker:

Dr. David Hughes is Senior Investigator with 16 years in the Process Research department at Merck, Rahway, NJ. His research interests: Physical organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and use of enzymes in organic synthesis. He has 47 publications and 15 patents to his credit. His doctoral work was at Northwestern with Professor Bordwell and he did a post-doc at Duke with Professor Arnett.

Abstract:

Development of an efficient process for a neurokinin receptor antagonist will be presented, focusing on introduction of three chiral centers. As an outgrowth of this project, mechanistic studies on the Petasis-Tebbe olefination were undertaken and will be discussed. The mechanism proposed in the literature is inconsistent with the results of this work.

The ACS Continuing Education Department
Opens Virtual Campus On The Internet

Washington, DC (September 1998): The American Chemical Society (ACS) Continuing Education Virtual Campus opens up this month at www.uol.com /acs. While ACS continues to offer its popular program of Short Courses, this new Web-based service affords an added benefit to chemical scientists and technicians. It provides greater access to quality continuing education programs for ACS members and others in the scientific community thanks to the worldwide accessibility of the Internet.

Harold Walsh, the assistant director for continuing education for ACS, explained his reasons for developing Internet-based courses: ñWe hope to reach chemists who are not able to travel to attend Short Courses or who simply prefer to take courses at their own offices or homes. Companies are going to have a great deal more flexibility in the training they can offer their employees, because these courses can be accessed any time of the day or night from any place with an Internet connection.î

The first course offered on the campus is Basic Statistical Analysis of Laboratory Data, developed by two renowned ACS Short Course instructors, Stanley N. Deming and Stephen L. Morgan. The course is completely interactive with on-line exercises designed to help the student gauge his or her progress at every step of the way. The information presented is based on practical examples that are found in typical chemistry laboratories. Also included is the opportunity to participate in on-going discussion forums and interact with the instructors and other chemistry professionals who are taking the on-line course.

The ACS Virtual Campus Web site is hosted by UOL Publishing, Inc., a leading publisher of high quality, interactive, Web-based courseware delivered through the Internet to the education and training market.

For answers to other questions about the ACS Virtual Campus, send your e-mail to shortcourses@acs.org .

A Cyberspace Science Milestone: All ACS Journals Now on the 'Net

The launch of 25 Web editions means new features, greater comprehensives, and flexibility for subscribers.

The ACS Publications Division has announced that-for the first time-Internet editions of all 25 of its prestigious journals are available. Officially launched at the ACS National Meeting in Las Vegas, these Web versions include interactive features not available in the print journals and a wide range of subscription options.

"We're providing our members and other scientists with what they've been asking for-Web access to all our journals," said Robert Bovenschulte, director, ACS Publications. "Few, if any, other scientific publishers can match the combination of new features, comprehensives, and flexibility we offer on the Web."

The ACS Web editions contain:

Two separate formats to view articles: interactive text (HTML) and complete page image (.pdf). Users can search and print articles from the entire database starting from 1996 to the present.

Interactive links to other recognized databases. These include Medline, the Protein Database, GenBank, and Chemport.

Articles ASAP (as soon as published). Beginning in January 1998, ACS will post journal articles on the Web as soon as they have been peer reviewed, copy edited, and checked by authors for accuracy. That will allow subscribers to see "published" articles several weeks before they appear in the pages of a printed journal.

"The editions come with flexible pricing, so subscribers pay only for as much or as little information as they need," said Bovenschulte.

For ordering and price information call 1-800-333-9511 or 1-614-447-3671, or travel to the ACS home page and click on "About Electronic Editions" at http://pubs.acs.org.
