Tenure-track Computational Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Tech is seeking applications from outstanding individuals for a junior-level tenure track faculty position in the broadly defined area of computational chemistry, including the fields of chemical biology, condensed phase chemistry, nanoscale science, and quantum chemistry.
Virginia Tech has recently embarked upon a major interdisciplinary initiative in the computational sciences and engineering with the development of a $5.2M state-of-the-art terascale computing facility that currently ranks number 14 in the world (http://www.tcf.vt.edu/). Concomitantly, the College of Science is seeking to hire new junior-level faculty in multiple departments, including chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, geology, and statistics, to add to our already extensive array computational researchers. Successful applicants are expected to establish vigorous, internationally recognized research programs, and to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Advertisements in Science, Nature, and C&E News have recently appeared. Potential candidates should visit http://cos.vt.edu/jobs to submit their application package (position number 042016), and arrange for three letters of support to be sent to our department chair, Prof. Joseph S. Merola Department of Chemistry, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061. Virginia Tech is an AA/EEO employer; applications from members of underrepresented groups are especially encouraged.

Assistant Professor, Chemical Biology
The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Tech is currently searching to appoint a new faculty member in organic chemistry with outstanding research and teaching potential. Our objective is to make an appointment in Chemical Biology, broadly defined, at the Assistant Professor level. The ideal candidate will have a strong synthetic component to her/his research, with proposals relevant to the prevention or treatment of Infectious Disease. We will be very grateful for your help in recommending candidates, or in calling our search to the attention of suitable candidates. Our University provides competitive startup packages, salaries, and release time. We have superb NMR, MS, and X-ray facilities staffed by highly skilled Ph.D. and M.S. scientists
We are enthusiastic about the invigorating and supportive scientific atmosphere in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Tech. Among our faculty are five NSF CAREER Awardees, one Dreyfus New Faculty awardee, and three Cottrell Scholars. In the most recent NSF ranking our Department placed 29th in the nation, with annual research funding of $11.7 million. Our search is part of a major initiative of the College of Science to establish a nationally-recognized, multi-department, multi-disciplinary research program in Infectious Disease.

Tenure-track, Nanoscience/Nanotechnology
The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Tech iis seeking candidates for a tenure track faculty position in the nanoscience/nanotechnology area, broadly defined. Our search is part of a major initiative of the College of Science to establish a nationally recognized, multi-department, multi-disciplinary research program in Nanoscience/Nanotechnology. Candidates with exceptional research and teaching potential are urged to apply at all levels, Assistant, Associate and Full Professor appointments. Ideal candidates will incorporate innovative chemistry in interdisciplinary efforts with colleagues in other Departments (such as Physics, Biology, Geology) and Colleges (Engineering, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Natural Resources).
The Chemistry Department at Virginia Tech provides an exciting, supportive and collaborative environment for both teaching and research. Among our thirty faculty members presently there are five NSF CAREER Awardees, one Dreyfus New Faculty Awardee, three Cottrell Scholars, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and three Virginia Scientist of the Year Awardees. Several colleagues are editors or associate editors of international journals. We have a total of 150 undergraduate chemistry majors, 110 graduate students and 30 postdoctoral fellows. Undergraduate labs are housed in a new (2004), well equipped, four story building. In 2005 we had $11,600,000 in annual external grant support, and our Department placed 29th in the most recent National Science Foundation ranking. We have superb NMR, MS, surface analysis and X-ray facilities staffed by highly skilled Ph.D. and M.S. scientists. Our University provides competitive startup packages, salaries, benefits and release time.
