With approximately 100 persons in attendance Dr. Carroll gave an engaging and humorous talk on the successes and pitfalls of the plastics recycling business. Kudos to the Clemson folks who hosted the Section and to all the members who attended.

WESTERN CAROLINAS 50-YEAR MEMBERS
This year we are pleased to have seven fifty-year members within our Section. The following are the 2004 fifty-year members who will be honored at our regular meeting at The Cedars in Hendersonville on September 15, 2004:

One of the special joys at our October 2001 meeting was the presentation of an ACS Salute to Excellence to Dexter Squibb. He was recognized and thanked for his twenty-one years of service as Editor of The Periodic News. The recent member survey reveals that The Periodic News is the essential backbone for communication within our Section. Thank You, Dexter, from all your faithful readers!

FUTURE SERMACS MEETING DATES
The meeting dates for future SERMACS meetings are as follows:
2004 Raleigh, Durham, NC ( North Carolina Section)
2005 Memphis, TN (Memphis Section)

This graph shows the year in which our Local Section members joined ACS.
A large percentage (over half) of our members joined the ACS in the past 10 years.
Our challenge now is the retention and involvement of these new members.
If you are a new member, consider how you might contribute to our Society as a volunteer with our local section!
