The Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society is

hosting a Teacher Day on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Princeton University. Cost: $25. Registration deadline: May 16. Up to 8 hours professional development credit given.

WORKSHOP FOR K-8 TEACHERS, "Chemistry is Everywhere: Integrating

Chemistry into the K-8 Curriculum", Dr. Kathryn Wagner, Princeton University Chemistry Department, Presenter. 3:00-6:00 pm, McDonnellHall A102. No additional charge. Space is limited. Register or reserve by May 16.

Practice simple, inexpensive chemistry-related hands-on activities that have multiple uses across grade levels and subject areas. Learn the chemistry behind the activities and directions of inquiry that are suitable for your grade level. Learn ways to combine a science activity with a history lesson and introduce a scientific concept with an art project. Look for the chemistry in your own favorite activities,

and discuss how the activities can be used to meet NJ Core Curriculum

Content Standards and national benchmarks for science and technology.

Assessments will be discussed.

SYMPOSIUM ON TEACHING HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY, Dr. David Laws,

Lawrenceville School, Chair. 2:00-6:00 pm, McDonnell Hall

High school teachers who have used innovative ideas and practices to

teach chemistry will present their work. Emphasis will be on curriculum

design, integrating technology into teaching, and using laboratory work

to supplement classroom experiences.

EDUCATION INTERFACE BUFFET DINNER, 6:00-8:00pm, Wu Dining Hall. No

additional charge. Reservations required.

Teacher Day participants will have the opportunity to continue discussions and meet post-secondary educators and industrial chemists with a special interest in education.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS: "Learning and Teaching", PROF. BASSAM SHAKHASHIRI,

University of Wisconsin, Madison. 8:00pm-9:00pm, Frick 120 (Kresge

Auditorium).

Prof. Shakhashiri is the author of the series "Chemical Demonstrations"

published by the University of Wisconsin Press. His presentations

always show that "Science is Fun!"
