Willamette University, a selective Liberal Arts college in the Pacific Northwest, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin August 2010. A Ph.D. in biochemistry or chemistry is required; expertise in analytical biochemistry is preferred. The successful candidate will have demonstrable potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduate students. The Chemistry Department is ACS-approved and offers a degree program with tracks in chemistry and biochemistry. The six current faculty have specialties in the subfields of analytical, biological, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. The advertised position will expand the department in anticipation of a five-course per year teaching load in 2010. The successful candidate will support both the chemistry and biochemistry tracks by sharing responsibility for the junior-level biochemistry and instrumental analysis courses and laboratories. All chemistry faculty are expected to teach in the introductory chemistry sequence and direct senior research. Additional teaching opportunities include advanced topics courses and the first-year seminar, College Colloquium. The department (www.willamette.edu/cla/chem/) is well-equipped with modern instrumentation, including a newly installed 500 MHz NMR. Faculty members mentor undergraduate majors in their senior research projects and other collaborative research. Funding for student-faculty summer research is permanently endowed, and pursuit of external funding is expected.
