SRC to host Science Cafe event

Spoon River College will present a Science Caf/ on Thursday,
Sept. 27, 2007 at the Canton campus. Several events are scheduled
that pertain to the theme of Natural Resources.
“The Lessons
of Eagles and Man” will be presented by Dr. Thomas Dunstan at 11:00
a.m. in the Spoon River College Conference Center. Dunstan is acting
director of Western Illinois University College of Art and Sciences’
Institute for Environmental Studies.
Dr. Dunstan, who taught
for 34 years in the Department of Biological Sciences at WIU, has
gained an international reputation as an expert on birds of prey and
has published a major article in the National Geographic magazine.
He participated in two of Marlin Perkins’ “Wild Kingdom” television
shows and was featured on the CBS bicentennial special, “Eagle Come
Home.” He is currently working to complete a special on the bald
eagle for “The New Explorers” for WBBM-TV in Chicago.
Dr. Mike Lemke, microbial ecologist at the University of Illinois
at Springfield, will discuss the “Emiquon Floodplain Restoration
Project” in the conference center at 1:00 p.m. Lemke, who received
his Ph.D. from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and studied lake
ecology at Michigan Technological University, has pursued two post
doctorate research appointments examining the role of microorganisms
in aquatic systems at the University of Alabama. He served as
Assistant Professor of Biology and Assistant Director of the
Environmental Studies Graduate Program at Pace University in New
York. He was recently appointed as a Research Associate at the
American Museum of Natural History for his work in microbial
ecology.
At 2 p.m., following the keynote presentations, Jeff
Bash, Spoon River College natural resources instructor, will conduct
a tour of the college’s prairie grass project. Those interested
should meet in front of the Centers building.
Several
activities will be offered on the campus throughout the day.
Students and community members can pledge to “Go Green!” and receive
“Go Green” ideas. The campus chapter of PEEPS (People for Earth’s
Ecological Preservation) will host a display and sell refillable
mugs. Habitat for Humanity will also have a display.
Lunch will be available for purchase in the Spoon River College
cafeteria.
All community members and SRC students are invited
to attend the Science Caf/, which is being funded with generous
support from the Illinois Heartland - American Chemical Society. The
SRC Canton campus is located at 23235 N. County 22.
