PMSE 2006 Fall Meeting Preface

Dr. Webster

A beautiful city and the latest from polymer research labs all over the world! You are sure to find both at the Fall 2006 ACS meeting in San Francisco. And even if you can't make the meeting, this CD will keep you up to date on all the latest happenings. Think of it as a virtual meeting, delivered straight to your own office.

At the Fall meeting we will have a very full program with over 600 papers and a number of very exciting symposia. Of note is the Roy W. Tess Award symposium honoring Jonathan Martin of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Also, the National Starch and Chemical Company Outstanding Graduate Research Award Symposium in honor of Jiaxing Huang will be held. The ICI Student Award Symposium features presentations by the award nominees. The award winners will be honored at an award reception Monday evening.

Other symposia being sponsored by PMSE are:

  • Advanced Membranes for Energy and Environmental Applications
  • Advances in Protein Drugs and Gene Delivery
  • Block Copolymers and Nanoscale Materials
  • Electroactive and Photoresponsive Metal-Containing Polymers
  • Nanotechnology Applications in Coatings
  • Polymers for Biomedical Applications
  • Science and Technology of Next-Generation Photovoltaics
  • Self-Assembly Approaches for Nanopatterning
  • General Papers/New Concepts in Polymeric Materials, with individual sessions on Synthesis; Functional Materials; Nanomaterials; Characterization; and Biodegradable Materials and Biopolymers.

There will also be a poster session, containing posters from all of these symposia. PMSE is also co-sponsoring a number of additional symposia with other divisions including Computational Material Design in Chemical Industries (Industrial and Engineering Chemistry), Fuel Cell Chemistry and Operation (Fuel Chemistry), Health Materials and Techniques (History of Chemistry), NSF Partnership for Research and Education (Chemical Education), Organic Thin Films for Photonic Applications (Polymer Chemistry), Polyfunctional Organoboranes (Inorganic Chemistry), and SWNTs From Synthesis to Application, From the Lab to the Fab: In Memory of Dr. Richard Smalley (Presidential Event). Finally, PMSE will have over 60 posters as part of the ACS-wide Sci-Mix poster session.

There are very many people who have worked hard to make this CD and the entire program a success. I specifically want to thank the PMSE Program Committee, consisting of Abhimanyu Patil, Darrin Pochan, and Zhenan Bao, who did the work well in advance of this meeting to identify the topics for the symposia. Also, special thanks goes to the PMSE Administrative Assistant, Eileen Ernst, who spent countless hours putting together both the meeting program and this CD. Quite literally, neither could have been accomplished without her.

Dean C. Webster

Vice-Chair, PMSE
