PMSE 2005 Fall Meeting Preface

Dr. Douglas

Welcome to Washington, DC! Whether or not you are able to attend the Fall 2005 ACS meeting, this CD of the proceedings for the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) will prove to be a valuable resource. If you cannot attend the meeting, be sure to look through the articles to find out about the exciting new research activities in polymers that are occurring all over the world. If you are attending the meeting, use these proceedings to help you find those key talks or posters you need to see. Either way, you will notice that this is one of the largest meetings ever for PMSE: 400 oral presentations and 205 posters will be presented over a 5 day span! There are three special symposia I would like to draw your attention to:

  • Tess Award Symposium in Honor of Omkaran Nalamasu: Dr. Glass is being honored for outstanding contributions in coatings science, technology, and engineering. There will also be a reception on Monday evening, August 29, 2005.
  • Fracture and Relaxations in Polymer Solids - In Honor of the 60th Birthday of Professor Albert F. Yee: This symposium celebrates the many contributions Professor Yee has made to understanding the mechanical behavior of polymers.
  • ICI Student Award: Six outstanding graduate students will be presenting their papers as finalists for this award. The most outstanding paper from this group will receive the ICI Student Award at the next Spring meeting.
Other symposia being sponsored by PMSE are:
  • Advances in Methods and Applications of Macromolecular Simulations.
  • Assembly of Polymers and Nanoparticles - From 2D to 3D.
  • Biologically Enabled and Bio-Inspired Polymers.
  • Combinatorial Approaches to Materials.
  • Green Polymer Chemistry.
  • International Symposium on Advances in Organometallic Polymers.
  • Scattering from Polymers.
  • General Papers/New Concepts in Polymeric Materials, with individual sessions on Optical and Electronic Materials; Biomaterials; Nanomaterials; Blends, Composites, and Semicrystalline Polymers; Properties and Characterization; and Synthesis.

There will also be a poster session, containing posters from all of these symposia. PMSE is also co-sponsoring symposia on Controlled/Living Radical Polymerizations with the Division of Polymer Chemistry and on Membranes for Energy and Fuel Applications with the Division of Fuel Chemistry. Finally, PMSE will have 60 posters as part of the ACS-wide Sci-Mix poster session.

As you can see, this is an exciting and very full program. There are very many people who have worked hard to make this CD and the entire program a success. I specifically want to thank the PMSE Program Committee, consisting of Timothy Bunning, Darrin Pochan, and Zhenan Bao, who did the work well in advance of this meeting to identify the topics for the symposia. Also, special thanks goes to the PMSE Administrative Assistant, Eileen Ernst, who spent countless hours putting together both the meeting program and this CD. Quite literally, neither could have been accomplished without her.

Elliot P. Douglas

Vice-Chair, PMSE
