Instructions for Authors
Step-by-Step Guide for Authors
Note to Symposium Organizers: Symposium organizers will be able to view the preprint PDF files after preprint submission close date. Upon approval by the organizers, the preprint PDF files will be forwarded to the preprint editors for final acceptance.
Help for Electronic Preprint Submission
As a precondition for presenting a paper in the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering, both a standard ACS abstract and a preprint manuscript (with one exception noted below) for the Proceedings volume must be submitted in strict accordance with published deadlines.
All abstracts and preprints must be submitted through OASYS , the ACS online submittal system, available via the ACS Meetings website (http://www.acs.org/meetings .). Hardcopy submission is no longer supported. The abstract must be submitted first, at which point the abstract is assigned a Paper Number. The preprint is then submitted as a word processing file under the same Paper Number (this ensures that the abstract and preprint are linked).
Outside of the electronically submitted abstracts and preprints themselves, address all communications to the Symposium Organizer, as listed in Future Programs. For the General Papers / New Concepts in Polymeric Materials sessions, the Vice Chair of the Division acts as Symposium Organizer. Authors lacking access to the internet or necessary word processing tools should contact the Symposium Organizer for assistance. Meeting-specific information, contact details for Division Officers , and any updates to these instructions will be posted at the PMSE Division website (http://membership.acs.org/P/PMSE/).
ACS ABSTRACT PREPARATION AND SUBMITTAL
All authors must use OASYS , the ACS online submittal system, to prepare and submit abstracts electronically. Detailed instructions are available at the ACS Meetings website http://www.acs.org/meetings Please make sure that all sections of the abstract are completed and that the title and author listings correspond exactly to those in the preprint manuscript. When there are different authors with the same affiliation, please make sure departments and street addresses are identical for each author, or OASYS will annotate each author as being from a different affiliation. Once the abstract is submitted electronically through OASYS , do not send any abstract copies to the Symposium Organizer.
PREPRINT PREPARATION AND SUBMITTAL
The Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering Proceedings include preprints of papers presented in Division-sponsored symposia. We are proud of this service and intend to keep the quality of the Proceedings high. Time does not permit editing of the submitted manuscripts; thus, the content and quality of each paper are the responsibility of the authors. Manuscripts are generally required for all presentations before the PMSE Division except for award symposia, where they are strongly encouraged. Please follow the detailed instructions below for preparation of manuscripts using the approved preprint template , which can be downloaded at http://membership.acs.org/P/PMSE/meetings/authinst.html. If a preprint is not in the correct format, it may be rejected. Note that the template has a footer containing meeting-specific Proceedings citation information; please ensure that you are using the most current version of the template.
The completed preprint manuscript should be submitted via OASYS using the Paper Number obtained from submission of the abstract (see above). Upon submission of the preprint word processing file, it will be automatically converted into PDF format and made viewable by the authors for checking and printing. Authors may re-transmit as many revised drafts as desired until the closing date for submissions. Do not submit a preconverted PDF file, and ensure that the correct word processor version has been selected upon submittal. After the closing date, the PDF file can only be viewed by the Symposium Organizer. At this time authors may be requested to submit further corrections if necessary. Upon approval by the organizer, the preprint file will be forwarded to the Proceedings editors for final acceptance. Once the preprint is submitted electronically through OASYS , do not send any preprint copies to the Symposium Organizer.
Content and Style: The editorial format and style should be that of a technical paper and should contain as much experimental detail and discussion as possible within the allowed length. The manuscript should not contain an abstract. Papers should be science and technology based. Commercial references and trade names must be limited to those essential for initial characterization of materials and/or equipment; subsequent references and discussion must employ generic terms.
Paper: Preprint template can be downloaded from the PMSE Division website as described previously (see sample at the end of Author Instructions). Please note that text will not be reduced for printing using these templates and the electronic submittal process, in contrast to the former hardcopy submittal process using the special camera-ready paper.
Manuscript Length and Page Charge: One-page (2-column) manuscripts are encouraged. Manuscripts of up to 2 pages (4 columns) will be published without charge. A charge of $100 per page will be billed for the third and fourth pages. Submission of a 3 or 4 page manuscript is regarded as a commitment to pay page charges. Manuscripts longer than 4 pages (8 columns) are not acceptable.
Figures: Figures and graphics must be incorporated into the word processing document file, so that the entire manuscript can be converted into PDF format. Figures should be black-and-white, with a size which is easily legible, including legends and text. Particular care should be taken with scanned images to ensure that acceptable resolution is achieved in the final PDF format. This can be checked by printing the submitted preprint file, rather than examining it onscreen only.
Format: Using the downloaded preprint template , your manuscript will automatically be printable at "camera-ready" size on 8.5" x 11" paper in a two-column format (each column 3.5" wide with 0.3" spacing between columns). The template also automatically sets the correct margins (0.8" on top, 1.1" on bottom, 0.6" on left and right) and indents (0.25").
WITHDRAWAL OF PAPERS
Submission of an abstract and a preprint manuscript constitutes a commitment of the author(s) to present the paper at its designated time. Requests to withdraw from publication cannot be honored if received after the Division's deadline for submission of abstracts and preprints. It is prudent to obtain proper publication clearance by the sponsoring organization prior to submission. The Division cannot assume responsibility for confidentiality of submitted material.
PUBLICATION DATE AND SUBSEQUENT PUBLICATION OF PREPRINT MATERIAL
The Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering Proceedings is now available in both CD and electronic (web) editions. CD copies are mailed out about three to four weeks before the national meeting. Preprints may appear on the web somewhat earlier ( http://pubs.acs.org/meetingpreprints/ ). The formal publication date, i.e. when the contents are first made available to the public, will be either the release date of the web edition or the date the CD edition was delivered to the post office, whichever is earlier.
ACS has released the following statement regarding potential future publication of material in division meeting preprints:
Publication of a preprint or extended abstract in an ACS division meeting preprint book in either print (CD) or electronic format does not preclude consideration for publication of a full paper in an ACS journal, provided that it includes significant new information and data beyond what was in the preprint or extended abstract. It may well preclude publication of a communication.
SCHEDULING OF PRESENTATIONS
The Division schedules symposia in accord with ACS regulations, which require "level programming" throughout the meeting. A final program, with the time assigned to each presentation, is published in Chemical and Engineering News , the PMSE Division website , and at the ACS website, (http://www.acs.org/meetings ) about one month before each meeting.
COPYRIGHT
Each volume of the Proceedings is copyrighted, as a whole, by the American Chemical Society . Rights to individual papers remain with the author(s). Thus, permission of the original author is required for reproduction of material appearing in these volumes. The Proceedings should be cited as the origin of the material.
