Local Section Olympiad Winners were Honored at May 2009 Section Meeting High school students from the Oklahoma Section of the ACS once again participated in the Chemistry Olympiad. The students took the United States National Chemistry Olympiad Exam, consisting of multiple choice, free response, and laboratory practical sections, at Oklahoma Baptist University this spring. These students and their teachers were honored at the May Oklahoma Local Section Meeting at the Oklahoma School of Science and Math in Oklahoma City. The students and their teachers are:

Three projects involving chemistry were chosen at each level to receive awards from the Oklahoma Local Section of the ACS. The awards include a certificate of accomplishment and a check, and were presented at the science fair banquet by Dr. Ken Brown. The following students were presented with awards. Senior High Division John Moore, Grove, OK, "The Cellulose Race: A comparative study of various pretreatments and enzyme hydrolysis treatments on cellulose decomposition". Ruthie Cantu, Moore, OK, "Methamphetamines: Hiding in Plain Sight". Daniel Wilburn, Fitzhugh, OK, "Lighting the Way! A Study of Maximizing Luminol Chemiluminescence". Junior High Division Emilie Salisbury, Mutual, OK, "Liquor Does it Quicker" (a comparative study of ethanol blended fuels). Brock Marble, Atoka, OK, "Bio-Alternative to Methyl Bromide". Tony Jasak, Norman, OK, "The Effects of Aeration and Fatty Acid on Ethanol Yield".
