Welcome to the webpage of Northeast Tennessee (NETS-ACS) Local Section of American Chemical Society Hey Everyone... The site is changing. Soon, this site will be transferred to a server graciously offered by UVa at Wise. To celebrate, the site will get a major overhaul. If you have any suggestions, please pass them along to info@netsacs.org. The new NCW T-Shirts are now available through November 14th. An educational guide to the t-shirt can be found here. NETSACS would like to thank all the volunteers who helped to bring together another successful National Chemistry Week! Anticipating a career transition? The Local ACS Career Counselor can help! Aug. 2003 Officer's Digest. SERMACS 2003 Update... Scheduled for November 16th-19th.

About the ACS: The ACS is the world's largest scientific organization,
representing over 150,000 members worldwide. The Northeast Tennessee Section
(NETS) serves Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. The Section was
formed in 1933 and held its 500th meeting January 20, 1998. About Our Membership: Our Section has a membership of slightly
less than 500 members. Approximately 53% of our members hold a doctoral
degree with 12% holding master's degrees and 32% with bachelor's degrees
in chemistry or chemistry related fields. Most of our members are industrial
chemists with 27 members (5.6%) in academic positions. A feature which is
unique to our Section is that approximately 20% of our members are retired
or emeritus members which is a significantly higher percentage than the
national average. About our Programs: This Section is one of the most active ACS
local sections, and sponsors a wide variety of professional and outreach
activities for the benefit of its members and the general public. The Section
meets monthly for dinner and a program.
We are actively involved in National
Chemistry Week in November. We also hold National Chemistry Olympiad
Exams to identify students to participate in national and possibly in the
International Chemistry Olympiad competitions. We annually recognize the
significant accomplishments of one of our members with our Speaker of the
Year award. Each year we honor a High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year
which includes money for the teachers to purchase supplies or take a workshop.
We also select a Technician of the Year to highlight the contribution of
technicians to the field of chemistry. We have had four National Technician
of the Year awards in our Section. In addition, the activities of the members
of the Section have resulted in a number of awards. We have recently initiated an annual program highlighting the scientific
and technological history of our region. Stay Informed: Bookmark this page and check it often to keep apprised of new events and information. For membership or other information contact James Leonard, NETS Chair. |
