NCACS Listservers

Currently there are four (4) lists that have been created for the NC Section ACS. The names are:

All meeting announcements and all job announcement are immediately posted to the appropriate list.

To subscribe:

From an e-mail client which is set up with the correct return address, address e-mail to:

Include a one-line message saying:

Your return address is the subscription address; therefore it is important that you subscribe from a mail client that supplies your correct return address.

More than one list may be subscribed to, but there will be some redundancies in postings.

If you are unfamiliar with a listserver, it is best described as an e-mail handling application that manages large distribution lists. Once subscribed, you will receive e-mail messages posted to the list as if they had been mailed to you individually. A list is analogous to a bulk mailing list for physical mail.

To unsubscribe:

From a mail client which is set up with the correct return address, address e-mail to:

Include a one-line message saying:

To post a message:

To request that a message be posted, address the message to the appropriate list:

ncacs@lists.ncsu.edu
ncacs_ycc@lists.ncsu.edu
ncchemed@lists.ncsu.edu

Web subscriber interface:

Most of the list options will never need to be changed, but can be changed by either the list owner (see below) or by the subscriber. For the subscriber to change options, the URL is:

http://lists.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr

It will be necessary to sign-in first which requires both your e-mail address and a password. If you do not have a password or have forgotten it, instructions are given on how to reset the password. Among the user options is one to set the password to a password of your choice.

When all else fails:

Contact the primary list owner:

bill_switzer@ncsu.edu

or go directly to the listserver help desk at:

listman@list.ncsu.edu

Privacy:

Every effort has been made to protect the privacy of those subscribed. The lists are hidden which means that the usual search engines will not find it. To see the list of other subscribers, you need to be subscribed yourself, but even so any subscriber can conceal his/her subscription. I don't recommend concealing it, however, because it may open a few personal networking opportunities if others, who have reason, can get your name and e-mail address. The lists are moderated which means that designated moderators must approve every posting.

Purpose:

There is no charge for subscribe or posting to any of these lists; it is a public service of NCSU and the ACS. The types of messages generally approved include: 1) postings of jobs, usually restricted to the NC Section and immediate surroundings, 2) NC Section ACS discussion group meetings and other local and 3) other announcements that might be of general interest. The moderators try to use good judgment not being too restrictive, but also not overwhelming the lists with too frequent postings. We also try to identify clearly in the Subject line what the message is about so that sometimes only the subject line conveys enough information for things of marginal interest. Messages appropriate for multiple lists will be posted to each which means that if you are subscribed to more than one list, you may occasionally receive more than one copy of a posting.
