John W. Hines

In 1986, during the early days of the Triangle Chromatography Discussion Group (the TCDG), Dr. John W. Hines served on the TCDG Symposium Planning Committee. In the mid 1980's, he played a key role in affiliating the Discussion Group with the North Carolina Section of the ACS. In 1987, he helped to draft the TCDG by-laws to make them consistent with requirements for becoming a discussion group in the North Carolina Section. He served both as treasurer and as secretary for the TCDG several times during the late 1980's and early 1990's. In 1993-94, John was President Elect, Program Chair and President of the Group. He has been Exhibition Coordinator several times for the Annual TCDG Symposium and Instrument Exhibition. John plays a major role in publicity for the Discussion Group working with the production and distribution of announcements, programs and flyers. For several years, John also served on the ACS Scholarship Committee. John most recently was Exhibition Chair for the 1998 Southeastern Regional Meeting of the ACS hosted by the Section. John has a gift of keeping a positive outlook and sense of humor even in the most trying times of working with a volunteer organization. For nearly 15 years of continuous service, the North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society is pleased to present the 1999 Marcus E. Hobbs Award for Service to the Local Section to Dr. John W. Hines.
