Catherince George from the Mid-Hudson Section won the national prize
in the 6th-8th grade category for her poster on “The Impact of the Chemistry on Medicine: Then and Now”.
The poster competition, designed for K-12 grade students, was held during 2001 National Chemistry Week
in recognition of the role of chemistry in society. The theme of the poster competition was “Celebrating
Chemistry: Then and Now". Participants were invited to draw a poster illustrating how chemists or chemistry
has contributed to the quality of our lives in the past 125 years.

The Mid-Hudson section sponsored the contest in November and the first place winning posters were
sent to ACS for further judging. All of the entries were displayed and judged during the 223rd ACS National
Meeting at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. A first place winner and an honorable mention were
selected from each grade category. The winners of the poster design contest were awarded a $500 U.S. savings
bond; the honorable mentions won a $100 gift certificate redeemable for NCW items.
