Alton J. Banks, a native of Newman, Georgia, received his undergraduate degree from West Georgia College, Carrollton, GA, in 1969. His doctoral work was completed in 1975 with Mark M. Jones at Vanderbilt University. Upon completion of his doctoral work, he taught chemistry, mathematics, and physics at Emanuel County Junior College in Swainsboro, GA. In 1976, he began a five-year stint at Texas A & M University. In the summer of 1977, he was a summer research fellow at the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory in Edwards, CA. In 1981, he was named director of general chemistry at Southwest Texas State University. In 1985, he served as a SERAPHIM fellow and developed The Periodic Table Videodisc, currently distributed by Journal of Chemical Education: Software. He has authored a solutions manual to accompany a chemistry textbook by Kotz and Treichel, now in its third edition. In 1991, he co-authored the general chemistry book, An Introduction to Chemistry: The Science for Everyone, with J.J. Lagowski. In 1991, he was named professor of chemistry at North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, NC. In 1997, he completed a laboratory manual based upon the "project model". He continues to develop instructional materials using video- and computer- based techniques.
The lecture will address some of the considerations associated with making a videodisc. The video materials used in making The Periodic Table Videodisc (from Journal of Chemical Education: Software) will be shown. Applications for many of the elements will be shown. Such reactions as cerium burning in air, potassium reacting with acid, and hydrogen reacting with air will be shown. This lecture is ideal for the general public or introductory science classes.
Sara Dierickx from DeWitt Central High School was the 2005 winner of the Donald Kiser Scholarship Award. The award and plaque were presented to Sara at the high school’s award ceremony May 23, 2005.
National Chemistry Week will be held this year October 16-22. The theme for 2005 is “Joy of Toys.” The NCW committee has met several times. Jerod Corbin is in the process of organizing a toy fair at the Family Museum in Bettendorf; one in Clinton is also being considered.
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, October 4th at Clarke College, Dubuque. Dr. Sara J. Risch will speak on “Flavor Chemistry.”
Call for Nominations: 2005 Buck-Whitney Award: The Eastern New York (ENY) section of the American Chemical Society is soliciting nominations for the Buck-Whitney Medal to recognize original work in pure or applied chemistry. This award honors two of the section's deceased members, Johannes S. Buck, former Associate Research Director of the former Sterling-Winthrop Research Institute and, Willis R. Whitney, the first Director of the General Electric Research Laboratory. The nominee must have made outstanding contributions to chemistry and be a resident of North America. We are interested primarily in identifying a chemist whose work has not yet received a significant national or international award, and whose career will be advanced by such recognition. A bronze medal and citation, an honorarium of $1000, and a grant toward the travel expenses of the recipient to address our local section will be offered. The nominee's work can be in either experimental or theoretical aspects of any field of pure or applied chemistry. To nominate someone, please provide the nominee's name and affiliation and list the specific contributions of the nominee to chemistry, including a description of his or her accomplishments. Your nominations will be reviewed by the Awards Committee who will forward the name of the chosen candidate to the Chairman and Executive Committee of the Eastern New York Section for approval. Nominations for the Buck-Whitney Medal should be mailed by September 15, 2005 to: Buck-Whitney Award Committee, Department of Chemistry, Union College, Schenectady, NY 12308.
The Buck-Whitney Award is given by our local section, but the recipient can come from anywhere in North America. Past recipients of the Buck-Whitney Award have gone on to win further awards, even the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, as demonstrated in 1999 by Ahmed Zewail and in 2003 by Paul Lauterbur.
Questions about the Buck-Whitney Award should be addressed to Prof. Michael Hagerman, Chair of the ENYACSAwardsCommittee,athagerman@union.edu

Todd M. Stark, Ph.D.
On behalf of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society, I invite you to submit nominations for the 2006 Richards Medal. The Richards Medal honors the first U.S. Chemistry Nobel Laureate, and recognizes "conspicuous achievement" in any field of chemistry. It is presented every two years by the ACS/NES. Nominations for the 2006 Award must be submitted electronically by November 1, 2005. A pdf file describing the submission procedure may be accessed at www.aerodyne.com or kolk@aerodyne.com
