Dr. Irmgard Howard –
Biographical Sketch
Dr.
Irmgard Howard holds the A.B. in zoology and the Ph.D. in biochemistry from
Duke University. She has done research in clinical chemistry, immunochemistry,
molecular genetics, and nutrition. Since 1970, she has served on the faculty of
Houghton College, teaching, among other courses, Clinical Chemistry,
Biochemistry of Nutrition, and Impact of Science on Society. She has been
honored for her commitment to the teaching of scientific literacy in such
courses. She has also offered Elderhostels in nutrition and in practical
chemistry for the layperson. Dr. Howard is concerned with conveying chemistry
to the public, as she has done in weekly radio programs, Nutrition Notes and
Consumer Concerns, which reflect her professional interest in food biochemistry
and chemistry for the general consumer. At an ACS national meeting, she has
been keynote speaker for a symposium on the public's misperception of
chemistry. During the summers of 1999-2001, she is participating in the John
Templeton Oxford seminars on science and Christianity, in which her research
focus is environmental ethics. Her hobbies include writing and musical
composition and performance, including "chemichoruses" for the
teaching of general chemistry.
The
NEW ChemKid Program
ChemKid is a childcare program for IL-IA section members coordinated through chem. clubs at colleges hosting the monthly section meeting. The program is designed to try to give parents a "night-out" with ACS. Volunteers from these student groups would look after school age (1st - 8th grades) children of ACS members who attend the monthly meeting.
Augustana College will host the ChemKid program during the October 16th ACS meeting. The program will start with a pizza supper for the kids and then the student childcare providers will have science activities to entertain the kids. The children will be in room 203 of the Science Building
To
take advantage of the program, parents would sign a release form detailing the
program activities and stating their willingness to enroll their children in
the activities. When making
reservations, please indicate the name and age of the children who would be
taking advantage of the program.
National Chemistry Week 2001 is November 4-10!
The mission of NCW includes to reach the public, particularly elementary and secondary school children, with positive messages about chemistry and to make a positive change in the public’s impression of chemistry. This year's theme for National Chemistry Week is "Art and Chemistry". An additional Theme is the Celebration of the ACS 125th Anniversary. You may wish to incorporate this theme into your NCW activities; additional ideas and resources are available at the ACS NCW web site: http://www.acs.org/ncw/
The deadline
for requesting funds has been extended to October 16th, or as long
as funds are available. Bring your
ideas to the meeting!
Get Involved! We are currently in need of a Quad Cities Engineering and Science Council representative. Your responsibilities would be to attend monthly meetings of the QCESC and be a liaison between the IL-IA ACS and the QCESC. Pad your resume by becoming a Great Lakes Regional Meeting (GLRM) Steering Committee representative. Your responsibilities would involve attending the GLRM planning meeting once per year during the GLRM. Also keep in mind that each fall we are in search of a new chair-elect and take nominations for secretary and treasurer. If you are interested, contact Randall Wanke or John Bonte.

People Are Chemicals, Too -- A Biochemist's
Approach to the Public's Fear of Chemicals
October 16th, 2001
8:00 – 9:00 PM
Room 304 Science Building
Augustana College
Rock Island, IL
In the United States the word "chemical" has
become overburdened with negative connotations. The headline "chemical
spill" automatically implies toxicity and disaster. Nobody wants to be one
of "the chemical people" who are "chemically dependent".
And various current advertisements urge Americans to buy products that are
"chemical-free", grown "without chemicals", and processed
with "no chemicals whatsoever". How, then, in this present
chemophobic environment, can chemists talk with nonchemists about chemistry?
Dr. Irmgard Howard maintains that while such communication may not be easy, it
is beneficial -- perhaps even essential -- to both professionals and
nonprofessionals. She emphasizes that society should be frequently reminded
that everyone makes chemical decisions, whether or not one knows any chemistry;
that everything in this world is composed of chemicals; and that, yes, people
are chemicals too! Dr. Howard illustrates her talk with examples of
chemophobia, collected over the past 25 years, and she discusses, using
consumer chemistry and nutritional biochemistry, ways of presenting chemistry
to a chemistry-wary and chemically-naive public.
