Abstract

The invention of the vulcanization of rubber by Charles Goodyear in the late 1800’s opened the door to allow the use of rubber as an engineering material. Prior to the discovery of the ability to “cure” rubber”, the material was used primarily as a sealant as rubber would remain sticky throughout is use life and would become embrittled on exposure to cold. The vulcanization process allowed the conversion of a viscous liquid into an elastic solid, having desirable engineering properties. Later the invention of vulcanization catalysts (accelerators) allowed the production of rubber products on a more economical scale, greatly reducing the time to produce a rubbed done a good job of bringing chemistry to the public. Now, take a few more moments to nominate those people for the Teacher of the Year Award and the Promoter of the Year Award. Let’s recognize those who have done a great job this past year!
