Our next meeting is December
12 at Augustana College.
New Melleray Abbey
Founded in 1849, the Abbey is now home to 36 monks of the Cistercian Order. In addition to a chance to learn about the history of the Abbey, hear about how the brothers farm on the Abbey’s lands. The monks farm over 1300 acres, mostly corn and soybeans. Employing organic methods, the brothers grow a majority of the food that is eaten at the Abbey. Come for an insightful discussion of the organic farming methods and see the intercourse between science and religion.
Get Involved! We are currently in need of a Quad Cities Engineering and Science Council representative. Your responsibilities would be to attend monthly meetings of the QCESC and be a liaison between the IL-IA ACS and the QCESC. Pad your resume by becoming a Great Lakes Regional Meeting (GLRM) Steering Committee representative. Your responsibilities would involve attending the GLRM planning meeting once per year during the GLRM.
National
Chemistry Week
Our Section has provided funds to help the following National Chemistry Week: the Augustana College Chemistry Open House, Dupont Scientist Outreach program in Clinton, Mount Carroll High School chemistry demo shows and the Muscatine grade school chemistry events.
Congratulations to the people nominated to the Executive Committee: Alan Abbott (chair-elect), John Bonte (chair), Randall Wanke (past-chair), Todd Miller (secretary), Rick Rogers (treasurer), Brian Mundell (councilor), and Mel Peterson (alternate councilor). Keep in mind that if you are still interested, nominations are still open until the November meeting.
