Sponsor a College Student

In 2000, we extended a special welcome to college chemistry/science students at the September meeting. Our "Sponsor a Student" event matched individual students with ACS members in order to encourage one-on-one conversations during the social hour and dinner. Each participating ACS member also paid the dinner cost for his or her student. In 2000, there were 13 matched pairs, with two colleges participating.

It is hoped to repeat this event in the fall of 2001. This year’s event will be either Tuesday September 12 in Muscatine or Wednesday October 16 at Augustana College (speakers and topics for these meetings are on the Section’s website). We can make this a better, even more successful event with your input. Contact Lisa Fields, Mentoring Committee Chair, with you comments, recommendations and suggestions for making this a better event. Lisa may be contacted at (563) 264-6039 or by email at lmfields@muscanet.com.

In memory of Mr. Henry Burzlaff

Illinois-Iowa Section ACS Member Henry August Burzlaff, 80, of 922 Leroy St., Muscatine, IA, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine. Mr. Burzlaff was honored in 2000 as a 50-year member of the ACS.

Mr. Burzlaff was born on May 24, 1920, in Clinton, the son of Emil F. E. and Dorothea Louise Killmer Burzlaff. He married Susan Almon on Dec. 29, 1955, in Old Hickory, TN.

Mr. Burzlaff was first introduced to chemistry as a student at Clinton High School. After graduating high school in 1938 he worked in the engineer's office at the Savanna Ordnance Depot in Savanna, Illinois for several years. Additionally, in 1942 he served as the Clinton County Iowa Deputy Treasurer.

He was a World War II veteran serving as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army in the 96th Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater 1942-1946. Upon his return to the U.S., Mr. Burzlaff enrolled in the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now Iowa State University). He received the Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950. After two years of employment he returned to Iowa State to earn a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (1954).

As a chemical engineer, Mr. Burzlaff worked in a variety of technical support positions for manufacturing facilities. His early work included a stint at the DuPont Old Hickory (TN) plant supporting cellophane manufacture (1950-52) and at Monsanto in Illinois supporting the manufacture of chlorinated solvents (1954). In 1954 until his retirement in 1985, Mr. Burzlaff worked in Muscatine, Iowa for a plastics packaging company that underwent six changes of ownership but was probably best known as Thatcher Plastic Packaging.

Mr. Burzlaff had recently described himself as a "crisis chemist" who endeavored to get production back on line quickly when a manufacturing problem arose.

In addition to membership in the ACS, Mr. Burzlaff was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Emulation Lodge 225 AF & AM in Clinton, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Lambda Psi. As hobbies, he enjoyed cooking, gardening and stamp collecting.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Burzlaff of Muscatine; one son, Tom Burzlaff and his wife, Susan, of Muscatine; one daughter, Sue Schultz and her husband, Mike, of Muscatine; two grandchildren, Sam and Melissa Burzlaff of Muscatine; and two nieces, Judy Diekhoff of Charlestown, IN and Joanne Haberman of San Bernardino, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Services were held April 2 at Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine; burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tenn. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Homes, both in Muscatine, IA.
