“Characterization of Effects of Cosmetic Products on
Human Hair & Skin"
The scanning electron microscope has developed into an important tool for characterizing the effects of cosmetics products on human hair, skin, and fingernails. For hair work, using a specially devised stage for a scanning electron microscope, the same identical areas of a hair shaft can be photographed as before and after pairs. Through the use of selected control subjects, it has been possible to define the differences between dry and normal skin, the former generally exhibiting larger uplifting desquamating layers (flakes) of stratum corneum. Examples will be given for (1) moisturizing products, (2) protein additives, (3) abradant cleansing products, and (4) moisturizing soaps. The effects, in some instances, are so subtle that unless the microscopy is done as before and after pairs on the same identical areas, the effects will not be recognized.
Sponsor
a Student
We
are again looking for volunteers to sponsor a college student at the March
meeting. Your part is to pay the
meal cost of one student - or ask your employer to pay the cost - and spend the
social and dinnertime visiting with the student you are matched with. Whether you are currently employed,
retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a
science-based career.
Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find
that you too have gained a lot.
Just listening to what a student has to say can be an enlightening
experience! Please take part by
signing up when you make your dinner reservation with Randall Wanke.
Chemistry
in Action
Drs. Marge Legg, Andy Axup and Rachel
Serianz at St. Ambrose University received a grant through the Camille and Henry
Dreyfus Foundation Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences. This grant
will enable us to provide a four day Kids and Chemistry Workshop for Teachers
(June 18-21, 2002, at SAU Lewis Hall, target group 4th and 5th grade teachers).
The workshop is in a "Make and Take" format so the teachers not only
learn the Kids and Chemistry activities - they receive complete kits of
equipment, chemicals, and student booklets for their class to work in small
groups on the activities. The course also has one credit of relicensure credit
available. The workshop is fully funded by the Dreyfus grant and SAU. Teachers
can apply on-line at http://www.aea9.k12.ia.us by following links under
Programs and Services or they can contact Marge Legg at mlegg@sau.edu. Please
let teachers in your area know about this program.
The Illinois-Iowa Section helped fund the
pilot program last summer, and the program earned a nomination for a
Chemluminary Award. Those who
participated last year commented favorably on the experience. Congratulations and thanks for the work
that Dr. Legg, Axup and Serianz put in for this program!
Mark your Calendars!
The Chemistry Olympiad going to be held on Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Loras College from 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM. Loras is located at 1450 Alta Vista, Dubuque, Iowa 52004-0178.
As in the past, we would like to have free textbooks in the areas of chemistry and physics that would be made available to participating high school teachers. Anyone able to make such contributions should contact Ed Maslowsky at emaslows@loras.edu.
