ABSTRACT

During the presentation the technical aspects of `grain to beer` will be discussed and interesting chemistry facts related to the brewing process and beer industry will be provided.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Brad Sturgeon is an assistant professor of chemistry (physical) at Monmouth College; he joined the faculty in fall of 2007. Although Brad`s main research interest is in the area of electron spin resonance and free radical biochemistry, he has a strong interest in the science and history of brewing beer. Brad has been brewing beer at home since 2003 and has integrated may aspect of brewing into the chemistry curriculum. Brad has served as a consultant for the Flying Dog Brewery (Frederick, MD), has been interview multiple times by Basic Brewing Radio podcast (www.basicbrewing.com), and is recognized by the `Beer Judge Certification Program` (www.BJCP.org).

DONALD KISER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Dr. Kiser`s vocation in chemistry has led the Illinois-Iowa Section to honor his memory through the establishment of this scholarship.

Students who are:

residents of one of the following counties in Illinois: Bureau, Carroll, Henderson, Henry, Jo Daviess, Mercer, Rock Island, Warren or Whiteside; in Iowa: Clinton, Dubuque, Jackson, Muscatine or Scott ,
entering their freshman year of college in the fall of 2009 at an accredited post-secondary educational institution,
pursuing studies in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering, and who demonstrate high level of academic achievement in science or related area, are encouraged to apply..

The 2009 scholarship is a one-year, merit based award in the amount of $750.00. St. Ambrose University will match this scholarship for the student`s sophomore, junior and senior year if the recipient attends that university.

Please note that the deadline for submission is April 1, 2009.
