Sponsor-a-Student: We are again looking for volunteers to sponsor a college student at the January meeting. Your part is to pay the meal cost of one student - or ask your employer to pay the cost - and spend the social and dinnertime visiting with the student that you are matched with. Whether you are currently employed, retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a science-based career. Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find that you too have gained a lot. Please take part by signing up when you make your dinner reservation with Janelle Torres y Torres.
ABSTRACT
Since its founding more than one hundred years ago the Parr Instrument Company has been engaged exclusively in the manufacture and sale of combustion bombs, calorimeters, chemical reactors, pressure vessels and related equipment developed specifically for laboratory use.
Throughout its long history the primary emphasis in all Parr manufacturing has been to provide its customers with quality apparatus, carefully designed for each application and backed by a competent technical support staff with many years of experience in this specialized field.
The 2005 Chemistry Olympiad will be hosted by Muscatine Community College on Saturday, March 12. This prestigious academic event is sponsored by the Illinois-Iowa Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). This is the fourteenth year for this very successful event. The Chemistry Olympiad committee and the ACS plans benefit students, teachers and schools.
The Chemistry Olympiad is open to all high school chemistry students from a region of eastern Iowa and western Illinois along the Mississippi River. Purposes of the event are to stimulate interest and recognize high achievement in chemistry. Students compete in first and second year exams. The top eight students on the second year exam qualify to compete for a place on the United States team in International competition. Prizes are awarded to the top students in each category at the local Olympiad.
After the exam students will take part in a series of engaging activities designed to challenge their ability to apply chemical principles. A highlight of the morning will be a presentation concerning medical or industrial applications of chemistry. An awards ceremony will conclude the morning. Awards will be made by Dr. Janelle Torres y Torres host for the event and Chair of the Illinois-Iowa ACS Section.
At the Olympiad teachers have the opportunity to interact with other high school and college chemistry teachers and with professional chemists and engineers. Chemistry teachers will receive ideas for chemistry activities, teaching strategies as well as other instructional material from the American Chemical Society. Schools attending the Olympiad will receive free college textbooks and laboratory equipment. Teachers will receive material with ideas for new creative laboratory activities designed to effectively teach specific principles in their chemistry curriculum.
The American Chemical Society is a large scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of chemistry in the public interest. The Olympiad receives the support of many area businesses and industries. As members of the Illinois-Iowa Section of ACS, we ask for your support - financial or otherwise.

The Salutes to Excellence award is a way to recognize a product of chemistry, a practitioner of chemistry, or a place of importance in chemistry that has made a positive impact on everyday life.
At the December meeting the ACS Illinois-Iowa Local Section presented this honor to Richard Kissack, M.S.
UPCOMING MEETING
The February meeting will be held at Clinton Community College, Clinton, Iowa on February 16, 2005.
