Whether you are currently employed, retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a science-based career. Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find that you too have gained a lot. 2005 CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD SET FOR MARCH 12

The 2005 Chemistry Olympiad will be hosted by Muscatine Community College on Saturday, March 12. This prestigious academic event is sponsored by the Illinois-Iowa Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). This is the fourteenth year for this very successful event. The Chemistry Olympiad committee and the ACS plans benefit students, teachers and schools.

The Chemistry Olympiad is open to all high school chemistry students from a region of eastern Iowa and western Illinois along the Mississippi River. Purposes of the event are to stimulate interest and recognize high achievement in chemistry. Students compete in first and second year exams. The top eight students on the second year exam qualify to compete for a place on the United States team in International competition. Prizes are awarded to the top students in each category at the local Olympiad.

After the exam students will take part in a series of engaging activities designed to challenge their ability to apply chemical principles. A highlight of the morning will be a presentation concerning medical or industrial applications of chemistry. An awards ceremony will conclude the morning. Awards will be made by Dr. Janelle Torres y Torres host for the event and Chair of the Illinois-Iowa ACS Section.

At the Olympiad teachers have the opportunity to interact with other high school and college chemistry teachers and with professional chemists and engineers. Chemistry teachers will receive ideas for chemistry activities, teaching strategies as well as other instructional material from the American Chemical Society. Schools attending the Olympiad will receive free college textbooks and laboratory equipment. Teachers will receive material with ideas for new creative laboratory activities designed to effectively teach specific principles in their chemistry curriculum.

The American Chemical Society is a large scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of chemistry in the public interest. The Olympiad receives the support of many area businesses and industries. As members of the Illinois-Iowa Section of ACS, we ask for your support - financial or otherwise.
