"Advanced Technology for Environmental Education Center (ATEEC)"

For our program Dr. Kabat-Lensch will tell us about the history, the products and services, and the future of ATEEC. ATEEC has been a partnership of several organizations and colleges including Eastern Iowa Community College District, Kirkwood Community College, The Partnership for Environment Technology Education, The University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, The Environmental Protection Agency, and most recently, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Over the years, ATEEC has developed a variety of materials pertaining to environmental education including a case study of the Nahant Marsh along the Mississippi River, "Brownfields in a Box", a guide to educational programs for Brownfields projects, many DACUM charts for developing educational programs for environmental studies. These DACUM projects were developed to take industrial requirements and apply them to classroom instruction ATEEC maintains an on-line resource guide to environmental programs and resources throughout the world. Of interest to teachers is the Fellows Institute held at the University of Northern Iowa each summer. This institute is a two-week seminar in which Math, Science, and Environmental teachers from high school and higher education meet to discuss current issues in environmental education. Curricular materials are created by the Fellows for dissemination nationally

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Kabat-Lensch is the Director of ATEEC for the Eastern Iowa Community College District (EICCD). She earned her BS degree at Iowa State University. She holds an MBA from St. Ambrose University and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. She started her work with EICCD as a curriculum designer for the Hazardous Material Technology program. She has seen this program through a variety of changes including a name change to Environmental Compliance and Technology (ECAT). She was instrumental in the offering of the program in a correspondence delivery format. She is currently supervising the conversion of the program to an on-line format. For the past 8 years, Dr. Kabat-Lensch has been the head of the ATEEC program, a comprehensive curriculum and faculty development program in environmental technology for high schools and community colleges.

Message from the Chair

I am looking forward to chairing the local ACS section this next year. As many of you know, this is my second time around as chair. The section has changed for the better since my previous chairmanship. For example, we now call them Chairs instead of Chairmen. Thanks to the work of previous officers, committees, and members, we have added several new activities to our section: National Chemistry Week, The Chemistry Olympiad, the teacher of the year award, and the Kiser scholarship. I would like to thank Dr. Wanke and the executive committee for the leadership they have shown this past year.

In the coming year, I hope to work with all of you to continue having great meetings, with great speakers. We will continue to support the activities that have been started by recent chairs and to expand our mission of promoting chemistry in the community. I hope to increase our attendance at meeting this year, and promote our meetings to a broader audience.

I hope to work with each of you to strengthen our section and make it more meaningful to our members.

Happy New Year to you all.

John Bonte

Chemistry Olympiad

The Chemistry Olympiad is coming up in just a few short months. This year, the Olympiad will be held at Loras College in Dubuque, IA, with Ed Maslowsky coordinating. Stay tuned here for more information, but starting talking to teachers and students to encourage them to participate, and contact Ed Maslowsky at 563-588-7041 or emaslows@loras.edu to volunteer to help.

Congratulations to Mary Russell for 33 years of service at John Deere. She has decided to retire for some well-earned rest. Thank you for your years of service.
