Sponsor-a-Student: We are again looking for volunteers to sponsor a college student at the October meeting. Your part is to pay the meal cost of one student - or ask your employer to pay the cost - and spend the social and dinnertime visiting with the student that you are matched with. Whether you are currently employed, retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a science-based career. Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find that you too have gained a lot. Please take part by signing up when you make your dinner reservation with Jerod Corbin.

ACS MIDWEST AWARD 2006 NOMINATION
Dear Colleague:
As the Midwest Award Chair for the St. Louis Section of the American Chemical Society, I solicit your assistance in identifying candidates for the ACS 2006 Midwest Award. The St. Louis Section of the ACS established the ACS Midwest Award in 1944 to recognize publicly outstanding achievements made in chemistry by an individual in the Midwest region. The award is conferred annually on a scientist who has made meritorious contributions to the advancement of pure or applied chemistry, chemical education, and the profession of chemistry. These contributions must have been made during a period of residence in the geographic area defined by the territories of the Local Sections that participate in the Midwest Regional Meeting of the ACS (this includes Local Sections in Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Southern Illinois, and South Dakota). Neither the nominee nor the nominator need be a member of the ACS, nor do they need to reside currently in the Midwest Region. Nominees can be from industry, academia, government, or private practice.
The 2006 ACS Midwest Regional Award will be presented at the 41st Midwest Regional Meeting to be held in Quincy, Illinois, October 25-27, 2006. The ceremonies on October 26 will feature the Midwest Award Lecture, a dinner honoring all Awardees, and the presentation of the Award which consists of a Medallion and a cash honorarium. Participation in these functions is a condition of the Award.
Nominations should include a nominating letter, two or more seconding letters, a curriculum vita, a brief biography, and documented and objective information regarding the outstanding achievements of the nominee. If the nominee is an academician, a list of persons who have received advanced degrees under his or her direction should be included. As indicated above, to be eligible, a nominee's cited work must have been performed while he or she was residing within the Midwest Region of the ACS.
Please submit nine copies of all nomination materials to me at my work address, given below. All nomination materials in regular paper format must be received on or before the deadline of March 31, 2006.
Professor James J. O'Brien,
ACS Midwest Award Chair
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
University of Missouri - St. Louis,
One University Boulevard,
St. Louis, MO 63121
Please note that this year, letters that solicit nominations for this Award will not be sent to various organizations, companies or universities in the ACS Midwest Region. We hope that this form of advertisement of the Award will be very successful. If you have any questions, please contact me by e-mail at obrien@jinx.umsl.edu or by telephone at (314) 516-5717 (O), or (314) 516-7023 (L).
Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Jim O'Brien
