Sponsor-a-Student: We are again looking for volunteers to sponsor a college student at the January meeting. Your part is to pay the meal cost of one student – or ask your employer to pay the cost – and spend the social and dinnertime visiting with the student that you are matched with. Whether you are currently employed, retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a science-based career. Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find that you too have gained a lot. Please take part by signing up when you make your dinner reservation with Jerod Corbin.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Christopher J. Kauffman has been employed by the Bettendorf Police Department since 1973. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with the Detective Bureau in July 2003. Prior to that assignment he was supervisor of the Crime Scene Technician’s laboratory. He is a Certified Latent Print Examiner, International Association for Identification and Past Fellow of the Fingerprint Society of Great Britain. He has several publications on fingerprint analysis and has given expert testimony in Iowa, Illinois and the United States District Courts regarding latent print identification. He has been referred to as the “Gil Grissom of the Bettendorf Iowa Police Department” by a local author, Max Allan Collins.
ABSTRACT
During this program, Lt. Kaufman will describe how Crime Scene Investigations are conducted. The focus will be on the methods and techniques used in the laboratory.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. “Father Time” has marched on and Alan Abbott has passed over his scythe to this youngster. The Vice Chair-to-Chair and Chair-to-Past Chair is a low-key “stick-pin” ceremony. Alan has performed the duties of Chair admirably well. Thanks for the service, Alan, and the support throughout the year.
Each new chair comes (as required by the National office) with new goals. Mine are not so unique, only to build on my predecessors. My primary goals are designed to invigorate our membership in growth and service to future chemists and public awareness at large. One such goal is to expand our Mentoring program and combine it with a Young Chemist program. Like all past chairs, I call on our membership to help me get these figurative ideas into something more literal. Any and all ideas from you are greatly appreciated. The Executive Council is open to any of your concerns or questions. Please contact us. We are always delighted to hear from our section members.
This year we will also try to relay more information ASAP at our website (membership.acs.org/I/ILIA/). This would include our newsletters, upcoming events, awards, program resources, etc. So please visit often. We already have our tentative schedule up for this year.
Hope to see you at The Lodge (former Jumer’s Castle) for this month’s meeting on “Crime Scene Investigations of the Quad Cities”.
