Sponsor-a-Student: We are again looking for volunteers to sponsor a college student at the February meeting. Your part is to pay the meal cost of one student – or ask your employer to pay the cost – and spend the social and dinnertime visiting with the student that you are matched with. Whether you are currently employed, retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a science-based career. Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find that you too have gained a lot. Please take part by signing up when you make your dinner reservation with Randall Wanke.
ABSTRACT
.
The Fryxell Geology Museum has become one of the largest and finest collections of rocks, minerals and fossils in the Midwest. Used originally and primarily as a teaching resource for Augustana geology students, it now serves a large and varied audience including local school groups, community groups and those who are curious about early life, the development of life-forms and the formation of rocks and minerals. Susan Kornreich Wolf, Fryxell Geology Museum, Associate Curator Educational Programs Coordinator, will conduct a general tour and discuss particular specimens. Please view the museum web site at www.augustana.edu/academ/geology/fryxell.htm for additional information.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
“Reaction” from the Bench
Wow! What a meeting! We had over 50 people attend the “CSI” talk. This included several students from 4 different colleges and even teachers from local area schools. To top it all off, Chris Kaufman gave a very entertaining talk, full of characterizations and humor.
Did you know that this area sports a geology museum? Well, the next meeting takes place across the Mississippi River over at the Fryxell Geology Museum on the Augie campus. The collection features dinosaur fossils from Antarctica, unusual gemstones, and other geological wonders. Susan Kornreich Wolf, Fryxell Geology Museum Associate Curator, will give us a tour to this wonderland.
I wanted to follow up last month’s commentary about some more of this year’s section goals (see hotlink to the left on this Section’s website for this year’s goals). The whole theme this year is to educate the Youth and the Public to increase their interest and awareness of Chemistry. This year’s goals expand from this main idea. We could better organize National Chemistry Week (Janelle and I have started a committee), the Mentoring program could be expanded, a Young Chemist group could be formed, more interaction with Student Affiliate groups could inspire students to stay with chemistry as a career choice, and overall greater use of public relations, such as this website, to inform everyone about ACS events and social programs could be done.
Visions and goals are nice. Action and implementation of these goals is another thing to accomplish. Without the members of this local section, none of the above will be possible. We need your help with ideas and time to be successful. If you have a thought, comment, or question, please contact any of us on the Executive Committee, we would be most delighted to discuss them.

CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD
Plans for the 13th Annual Chemistry Olympiad are underway. It will be held Saturday, March 27, 2004 from 8 AM – 12:30 PM at Clinton Community College. This is an important event sponsored by the Section, and the committee requests that members of the Section encourage high school teachers and students to participate. Volunteers are needed to proctor the tests and help with demonstrations after students have taken the test. Donations of text books, laboratory equipment and of course $$ are welcome! Contact Richard Kissack 563-242-4812 rkissack@clinton.net, or John Bonte 563-244-7138 jbonte@eicc.edu.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
The next meeting, March 9th, will feature a tour speaker, J.Patrick Hannan, who will speak on “Environment, Public Apathy, Chemistry.” The meeting will be held in Clinton, hosted by Dr. Todd Miller.
On April 6th, Glen Roy, a tour speaker, will give a talk on “Taste Sensors.” This meeting will be held at Monmouth College.
