Applequist Named High School Teacher of the Year
Section member Dr. Michael Applequist has been selected as High School Teacher of the Year (TOY) by the Illinois-Iowa section. Mike teaches chemistry and other physical sciences at Mount Carroll High School in Mount Carroll, Carroll County, Illinois. He has been an ACS member since 1984 and has been a member of the Illinois-Iowa section since he moved to the section's area in 1998.
Mike has involved his students in learning and getting excited about chemistry in many ways. He has allowed his students to experience one of the best ways to learn - to be the teachers/leaders themselves - in National Chemistry Week (NCW) activities for the past three years. He led his students in developing and perfecting demonstrations and activities for children, which were then carried out at several elementary schools in Carroll County. Mike also brought some of his students to participate in the IL-IA section's Chemistry Olympiad in 2001.
This year's TOY award consists of a certificate and $100 given to Mount Carroll High School to be used as Mike directs. The section plans to present the award to Mike at the December awards meeting. The section also plans to nominate Mike for the Regional award. Congratulations, Mike Applequist!
