Sponsor-a-Student: We are again looking for volunteers to sponsor a college student at the December meeting. Your part is to pay the meal cost of one student - or ask your employer to pay the cost - and spend the social and dinnertime visiting with the student that you are matched with. Whether you are currently employed, retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a science-based career. Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find that you too have gained a lot. Please take part by signing up when you make your dinner reservation with Janelle Torres y Torres. Also, let Janelle know if you need van assistance.

ABSTRACT

Season of Light" is a multimedia planetarium show that uses the planetarium projector, astronomical images, music and narration to tell the story of the link between our holiday traditions, a Season of Cold and Light, and the sky. December is the darkest and coldest month of the year and for centuries people have held festivals, used fire and in other ways tried to bring light to the winter darkness. The program also explains the changing seasons, explores the winter constellations and speculates about the Star of Bethlehem. Noah Adams of NPR is the narrator

DIRECTIONS TO AUGUSTANA

Directions to the Wilson Center and the John Deere Planetarium at Augustana College: The College is located at 38th St. and 7th Ave in Rock Island, IL. Dinner is in the Wilson Center. The Wilson Center is located in (behind) the College Center.

Our program is in the John Deere Lecture Hall and the John Deere Planetarium, up 38th St. hill - second drive on the right. Note the Observatory Dome and Tower.

Coming from the East:

Continue west on I-80 as it changes to I 280/74 and continue about 11 miles to the Moline exit. Exit on I 74 and after crossing the Rock River exit on Exit 4A (John Deere Road/Highway 5 West). Travel West and turn right on 38th St. in Rock Island. Use Rock Valley Plaza and K-Mart store on the left as landmarks. There is an Augustana College sign just before you get to 38th St. Travel north on 38th St. to 7th Ave. Turn left at the light and make a quick right into the Centennial Hall parking lot. The College Center and the Wilson Center are across 7th Ave. to the South. Use the pedestrian bridge to cross 7th Ave. to get to the Center. Go through the College Center and up one floor and outside. Wilson Center is to the left.

Coming in on 88 West

Continue on to Highway and follow it (now the John Deere Road) to 38th St. IN ROCK ISLAND. You will pass 38th St. in Moline. Follow directions above to the Wilson Center.

From Davenport

Cross the Mississippi on the Centennial Bridge into Rock Island. Turn left on the one-way at 5th Ave. and at 38th St. and 7th Ave. (stop light) turn right onto 7th Ave., and make a quick right into the Centennial Hall lot. For people needing a ride from the Centennial Hall parking lot up to the Wilson Center, and to the Planetarium and back after the program, Betty Peterson will have her silver (white) minivan in the driveway along side Centennial Hall with the blinkers on. I would assume that there would not be more than 1 or 2 van loads - 4 persons each. If we can get some idea of the number it would help. Betty will drive them up to the Planetarium afterwards and, then back to the parking lot. (Hopefully those needing assistance will not arrive at the last minute.)

Since there will be a 7:00 show the Planetarium lot probably will be full early so people coming for our program in the Lecture Hall and in the Planetarium should use the Centennial Hall lot and walk up to Wilson and for the Lecture Hall part of the evening.
