Sponsor-a-Student: We are again looking for volunteers to sponsor a college student at the October meeting. Your part is to pay the meal cost of one student - or ask your employer to pay the cost - and spend the social and dinnertime visiting with the student that you are matched with. Whether you are currently employed, retired, or between jobs, you have much to offer to a student planning a science-based career. Additionally, after this brief mentoring experience you will likely find that you too have gained a lot. Please take part by signing up when you make your dinner reservation.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Toxicology describes the effect of poisons upon living organisms. Toxicological chemistry is the science that deals with the chemical nature and reactions of toxic substances, including their origins; uses, and chemical aspects of exposure, fates, and disposal. Toxicological chemistry addresses the relationships between the chemical properties and molecular structures of compounds and their toxicological effects. It is concerned with the origins, use, structure-activity relationships, chemical aspects of exposure, fates, and excretion of toxic substances. Toxicological chemistry provides a meaningful approach to the study of toxic substances from the viewpoint of chemical students and is developing as an important sub discipline supplemental to environmental chemistry, environmental engineering, toxicology, industrial hygiene, and related areas. The specific aspects of toxicological chemistry addressed by the lecture include: (1) biodegradation and bioaccumulation, (2) aquatic and soil environmental biochemistry, (3) toxicology, (4) toxicological chemistry, (5) toxic elements, (6) organometallics and organometalloids, (7) toxic inorganic compounds, (8) toxic organic compounds and hydrocarbons, (9) oxygen-containing organic compounds, (10) organonitrogen compounds, (11) organohalide compounds, (12) organosulfur compounds, (13) organophosphorus compounds, and (14) toxic natural products.

Audience Level: Chemists, Students
Categories: Chemical Education, Engineering, Environmental Chemistry

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Stanley E. Manahan is a professor of chemistry at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he has been on the faculty since 1965. He received his A.B. in chemistry from Emporia State University in Kansas in 1960 and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1965. Since 1968, his primary research and professional activities have been in environmental chemistry, with recent emphasis on hazardous waste treatment. Current research deals with gasification as an alternative to incineration as a means of thermally treating hazardous waste materials without producing toxic pollutant byproducts.

Professor Manahan teaches courses on environmental chemistry, hazardous wastes, icological chemistry, and analytical chemistry and has lectured on these topics throughout the U.S. as an American Chemical Society Local Sections tour speaker. He serves as external examiner to the Environmental Sciences Program of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and as an advisor to the Environmental Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Program of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He is also president of ChemChar Research, Inc., a firm working with the development of non-incinerative thermohemical and electrothermochemical treatment of mixed hazardous substances containing refractory organic compounds and heavy metals.

Professor Manahan has written books on Environmental chemistry (Environmental Chemistry, 6th ed., 1994, Lewis Publishers/CRC press), general/environmental chemistry (Fundamentals of Environmental Chemistry, 1993, Lewis Publishers/CRC press), hazardous wastes (Hazardous Waste Chemistry, Toxicology and Treatment, 2nd ed., 1990, Lewis Publisher/CRC press), toxicological chemistry (Toxicological Chemistry, 2nd ed., 1992, Lewis Publishers/CRC press), applied chemistry, and quantitative chemical analysis. He is the author or co-author of approximately 85 research articles.

NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK

A report of the activities of National Chemistry Week 2004 and the updates on activities planned for NCW 2005 is on our website: http://membership.acs.org/I/ILIA/. The theme for 2005 is “Joy of Toys.” The NCW committee has met and several exciting ideas are being considered.

CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD

Dick Kissack reported that 64 students from five area high schools participated in the Chemistry Olympiad held at Muscatine Community College on Saturday,March 19, 2005. Although the numbers were lower than usual, the event was very successful. The accommodations were excellent and the awards well balanced. Top students from the Olympiad are: Grand Chemist - Ritu Gopal, Sterling High School; also qualifying for the National Exam: Jared Reed, Sterling; Stephanie Brosius and Ryan Sivertsen, Moline High School; Aaron Gamino and Chris Betzle, United Township High School; Doug Vandermyde and Alene Vandermyde, Morrison High School; Matt Appuhin and Richard Casper, Fulton High School. Alternates are: Mega Fliss, Sterling, Sarah Knox, Moline, Alex Hansen, United Township. Winners in the first year category include: Ben Kinney, Sterling; Sobir Bazarbayer and Samuel Browning, United Township.

The national exam will be held at Muscatine Community College, April 16, 2005.  The committee is requesting the help of few members to help proctor and watch the students in the lab.  Please contact Dr. John Bonte or Dr. Janelle Torres y Torres.

UPCOMING MEETING

The May meeting will include a tour of the Bent River Brewery in Riverdale. The date of this event is Thursday, May 5th.
