Family Museum/Hubble Space Telescope Adventure
The Hubble Space Telescope is designed to immerse visitors in the magnificence and mystery of the Hubble mission. The exhibition is divided into sections, including a 1:5 scale model of Hubble, history of Hubble, planets, stars, galaxies and the universe. There are 16 interactives that allow for hands-on discovery of scientific concepts and technology, from the solar array panels to locating objects to working on the telescope in space. Pictures and videos found throughout the exhibit.
The NEW ChemKid Program
ChemKid is a childcare program for IL-IA section members coordinated through chem. clubs at colleges hosting the monthly section meeting. The program is designed to try to give parents a "night-out" with ACS. Volunteers from these student groups would look after school age (1st - 8th grades) children of ACS members who attend the monthly meeting.
State Capitol Day Report
Sally Rigeman, Betty Peterson, Larry Ladwig and Lynn Wiedenmann represented our Section at SCD. The morning program included presentations by Ms Gwen Pollock, State Board of Education consultant for K-12 Scientific Literacy and Mr. Paul Kimmelman of NCREL. In the afternoon, our group went to Capitol Hill and dropped off ACS lobby packets with the 5 senators and 8 representatives who represent the counties of our Section, personally with Senators, Denny Jacobs and Todd Sieben and Representatives Joel Brunsvold, I. Ronald Lawfer and Laura Kent-Vaughn. It gave our members a chance to become better aware of issues with science education, and give the legislators input. Thanks to those who participated.
