BIG BANGIN' NEWS

We won TWO ChemLuminary awards for 2004. The awards were for Outstanding Event for the General Public Using the Yearly Theme and Outstanding Performance by Local Section Small Size Category Award. Mel Peterson, Alternate Councilor, accepted the awards on behalf the section on August 30 at the 7th annual ChemLuminary awards ceremony during the 230th annual National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society at Washington, D.C. He brought them back and presented them to the members attending the monthly meeting at Muscatine Community College. Great job all around and thanks to all who helped support the effort (during my 2004 reign of terror). A press release on these awards is at the bottom of this page.

Chemical Society receives awards

The Illinois-Iowa section of the American Chemical Society received national recognition during the 230th annual National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society in Washington D.C.

The awards were based on accomplishments of the local section during 2004 as reported by section chair Jerod Corbin of Sethness Products Co., Clinton, Iowa. They were accepted by Dr. Mel Peterson of Augustana College, alternate national councilor of the section.

Two awards were made:

Outstanding Event for the General Public Using the Yearly Theme.

The Illinois-Iowa section inspired youth of the area to understand the importance of “Health and Wellness.” They also provided opportunities to explore health science with support from health providers.

Outstanding Performance by Local Section Small Size Category Award.

The Illinois-Iowa section utilized the Innovative Projects Grant Program, collaborated with neighboring sections and hosted eight successful new activities, participated at the Illinois State Fair, and sponsored a well-attended topical meeting, CSI of the Quad-Cities.

Activities of the Illinois-Iowa section include sponsoring the high school “Chemistry Olympiad,” “Fun with Science” and chemical demonstrations for young people during National Chemistry Week.
