From: "Brad Smith, ACS Legislative Action Network" To: Subject: Thank You Science Funding Included In Spending Bill Date: Friday, June 27, 2008 7:37 AM Dear Connie: Thank you for communicating with your elected officials over the last three months to ask them to include funding for science in the FY 2008 supplemental spending bill. Because of your efforts--making over 800 personal phone calls to the Senate, generating 4,272 LAN letters to members of Congress and Capitol Hill meetings by the ACS Board of Directors--we have achieved a victory for science. The U.S. House and Senate have passed the supplemental spending bill: • $62.5 million for the National Science Foundation • $62.5 million for the Department of Energy Office of Science • $150 million for the National Institutes of Health Though these funding levels do not immediately offset some of the pain associated with the diminished budgets for many of the science agencies, the inclusion of funding in the supplemental spending bill shows a commitment to federal research and to math and science education for the future. Once again, thank you for your efforts. Without you, this victory would not have been accomplished.
