The first two courses were devoted to combinatorial chemistry. On Saturday, September 29, 2001, Dr. Vijaya Gracias of Abbott Laboratories presented "The History of the Solid Phase Combinatorial Chemistry".
Please note, the October 27 course by Dr. Irini Zanze titled: "The History of the Solution Phase Combinatorial Chemistry" was cancelled and will be rescheduled in early 2002. Please continue to check the web page, or call the Section office for updates. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
The November course held on Saturday, November 17, was on Statistics for Chemists given by Kenneth Brubaker of Argonne National Laboratory. This presentation was intended for chemists whose previous exposure to statistical concepts range from no exposure to an introductory general statistics course, and who want to understand the application of basic statistical concepts in their work environment. The topics covered included basic concepts, statistical testing and decision making, and analytical applications such as determination of detection limits.
The January program held on Saturday, January 26, 2002 was on Job Searching for Chemists given by Carol Vancura from the Human Resources center of MediChem Research Inc. This presentation was intended for students, unemployed chemists, or those looking for new positions. There was no cost for this program.
The February program was held on Saturday, February 16, 2002 and was on Searching for Chemical Information on the Internet. It was given by Ms. Carla Lee, Head of the Science Library, Loyola University and Ms. Andrea Twiss-Brooks, of the John Crerar Library/Chemistry Library, University of Chicago. Note: this day only, the short course met in room 202.
The March program on Saturday, March 23, on Recent Developments in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, to be presented by Dr. Robert Botto of Argonne National Laboratories was cancelled due to lack of interest. The course on Recent Developments in NMR was to cover the following three areas in solid-state NMR and NMR imaging:
The program to be held on Saturday, June 8 was cancelled due to lack of interest. It was to be on FT-IR Sample Handling - Methods and Accessories and deal mainly with reflectance techniques including the advantages of the reflectance accessories and the limitations when using them. The speaker was Dr. Richard Larsen, founder of Spectral Consulting in Lakewood, N.J.
