What's New
Joint ACS CELL-EPNOE Open Workshop at the ACS Spring Meeting in New Orleans Polysaccharides as a Source of New Materials: ACS National Meeting, The European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence (EPNOE) (a network of 16 major research institutions in Europe) and the ACS-CELL Division join efforts to promote research and education in the area of polysaccharides. The objective of this half-a-day workshop is to give an overview of the research challenges facing US and EU in the area polysaccharides as a source of new materials. The program will include discussions with distinguished scientists in the fields: (1) “bioplastics” and the EU bioplastics 2030 prospective study; (2) bridging the starch and cellulose worlds; (3) enzymology as a key for disassembling polysaccharides, and (4) polysaccharide-based functional materials (biodegradable packaging, polysaccharide functionality in foods, etc.). Researchers, students, industry personnel, etc. will benefit from this unique opportunity. All welcome. Division Program at the ACS Spring Meeting in New Orleans The Division is sponsoring and co-sponsoring 15 symposia and one poster session at the upcoming meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans in April 2008. Graduate Student Travel Award The Division is currently sponsoring a program to provide funding for graduate students to travel to a National ACS meeting to present orally the results of their research. For more information on this award and how to apply go to the Graduate Student Travel Award page. Promotion for Chemistry Journals SPRINGER is currently running a promotion for Chemistry journals, and this includes CELLULOSE. For a limited period, initially two months, Springer is offering free access to all of our journals via the following link > Springer CELL Recognized as Innovative and Outstanding Division! At the ChemLuminary awards in Philadelphia, the Cellulose and Renewable Materials Division was honored to receive an award from the ACS Committee on Divisional Activities (DAC). The award was in the category of "Innovation and Outstanding Service to Members of a Division". Here is what DAC had to say: "Cellulose and Renewable Materials - CELL created and sponsored a unique "Chemistry of Polysaccharides" Gordon Conference with international officers and rotated locations between North America, Europe, and Japan. It was a truly international chemical interaction." CELL Division Symposium gets recognized in C&E News "GOING BEYOND FEATHER DUSTERS" - Chicken feathers are being transformed into films, composites, plastics, and roofing material".
