Winter/Spring 1999

Committee Meeting

A special Executive Committee meeting of the ACS Akron Section will be held on Friday June 25 in Hudson, with cook-out at 5:30 pm and business at 6:30 pm. Long-range planning for the section is the subject. Elements include mission statement, and goals, objectives, and action plans. Some topics might be membership, participation, outreach, teachers, ACESS, and by-laws.

Career Service

Amy Milsted of the U of Akron and Jim Visintainer of Goodyear Research have been appointed as National ACS Career Consultants by the Council Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs. Amy and Jim are members of the Akron Section, and can give advice to a broad range of ACS membership, from new graduates who need guidance in beginning a professional career, to mid-career chemists seeking a new direction and assistance in identifying transferable skills.

The career program is available to Akron Section members, but to maintain confidentiality, Akron Section members will not be matched with these consultants from their own section. For more information about the program or about being matched with a consultant, contact Elaine Diggs at 800-227-5558x4436. This service may be particularly valuable to our members whose employment was terminated this month at BFGoodrich's Brecksville facility.

Judges Needed

Help our young people in their study of science and encourage them to consider science as a career. There are two science fairs in March for middle and high school students that need judges. On Saturday, March 6, the Akron Public Schools holds its annual Akron Science and Technology Expo at Central-Hower High School. On Saturday, March 27, the Western Reserve District Science Day will be held at the Gardner Student Center on the campus of the University of Akron. At both events, judges will meet at 7:30 am for coffee and donuts and finish by 12:00 noon with a complementary lunch.

Please contact Walt Ruthenburg or call 330-796-7385 with your name and some means of contacting you. Walt can provide additional details, which will also be published in the February Akron ChemLine.

Annual Report

One of the top activities of the ACS Akron Section, according to its annual report, is Project Seed. The section increased its involvement in this national activity in 1998 by hosting six students, the most in this decade for the section. Four were Summer I students (new to the program) and two were Summer II students (repeating a second year). Five of the students worked at the University of Akron and the remaining student worked at BFGoodrich Research. For the first time, unfortunately, the section had a drop out. The five students that completed the program enjoyed the work and learned about chemistry careers. They wrote papers on their work at the end of their projects and presented posters to the section at the October general meeting. The students, along with their parents and preceptors, were recognized at this general meeting. Thanks go to Claire Tessier, Roger Crawford, and the preceptors for their work with this program. Contact Roger Crawford at 330-972-6838 for information on 1999 Project Seed.

Newsletter Printing

Harlan Wilk, the ACS Akron Section newsletter editor, arranged for an experimental printing process to be used to print the paper version of the March issue of the Akron ChemLine. A result of the process is that Rich Corbett of Consolidated Printing and Publishing produced offset printing plates directly from Harlan's computer files. Comments can be directed to the editor.
